When I pull up at home in the X-90, it clicks and ticks like something cooling down. I opened the bonnet tonight and even the bonnet prop was hot, the front radiator support and even the cruise control unit. There was a crapload of heat under the bonnet which dissipated quickly once it was opened.
It's not overheating, there's heaps of coolant etc but it's like the whole underbonnet area was an oven. What gives?
Lack of airflow? Can't see anything caught up in the front intake areas etc...

Have you done the bodylift yet? Not necessarily related to your problem but if you have then maybe (if you haven't already) you'll want to pack up the foam on the top of the radiator so the cool airflow goes through the radiator and not over the top.

While we are talking underbonnets... anyone got anyideas about a dual battery tray? Supposedly a Vitara SWB one fits, but they are on the passenger side... seems the only space in an X90 is on the drivers

Standard Factory fitment. They didn't shift the battery to the passengers side till later on. I picked up a spare from Lee at Suzi Four but if A1 has one it should do the job.

Re the heat....
Just had a major dig around under the bonnet, appears the front (thermo?) fan isn't working, just gotta do a little fuse location... anyone know if there are any "inline" fuses of relays around the fan itself?

A friend came over and went right over everything with a meter and it's a dicky plug that causing the fan to run intermittantly. He wiggled it around and it keep stopping and starting. It's this plug:
...problem is... how the fark do get the bugger open?? Won't even separate when the toggle is down...

Gave up... both Podge and I tried every conceivable way to get it undone and we threw in the towel. I ended up cutting the wiring either end and busting it open for a squizz... lo and behold!
Some idiot had *glued* the %#%@! thing and the glue had eaten the connections. I've stripped, separated, and joined the wiring up with heaps of tape. I'm assuming as there was no relay or fuse in the plug this should be ok.... works perfectly
Now just need to monitor it and check whether heat-up issues are related only to aircond use... mind you, the air cond is FARKING cold now
If that's the case, can I just install a separate switch to run the fan without the aircond being on...? Instant thermo?

Hmmmm ok... there is still a shitload of heat under there, to the point that if I run the engine for 30 minutes stationary I can barely touch the bonnet
My temp gauge goes up reasonably fast but stops at normal operating level, no indication of boiling issues in radiator, no leaking coolant... nothing.
But there is a lot of heat coming off the back of the raditor via the clutch fan... it's obviously doing it's job well.
Any ideas?

not sure if this is any help by my j20a vitara has been bodylifted and i have filled the gap from the radiator to rad support panel with flat rubber sheeting & also my bonnet has the factory heat insulation on it and i can drive 20kays/30minute drive to work in the morning & when its cold the frost/moisture is STILL on the bonnet when i get to work. the engine ticks & crackles heaps after shutdown due to the heatsheilds on the exhaust manifold & cat but the bonnet is cool to touch. my gq pootrol had steam coming off the bonnet under the same conditions. also mine has factory rubber "side skirts" each side of the radiator.

Mine still has the factory skirts so there's only only direction airflow can go... to the radiator face. There's no heat insulation on the bonnet.
I just got back from going down the supermarket without the aircond on on and whilst the temp gauge went up, the bonnet was still cool to touch, Big test will be tommorrow morning in peak hour traffic I suppose

Not sure if it would work on the x-90, but on my rigs i have the bonet hindge spaced up slighty so the rear of the bonet sits slightly above the body, allowing hot air to blow out. It makes a slight difference to my zook underbonnet temp after a hot day crawling round a slow speed.

Have been chatting with other X90 owners in the UK, seems that do tend to run warm. But they generally don't fit aircond.
Dunno, maybe it's the extra AC radiator sitting in front of the main one blocking airflow or something ... theoretically it would be running hot, thus the main radiator would be sucking in air that's already heated... am I wrong on this one?

will the a/c fan work as a thermo style of thing? i am running the std vit viscou fan and was thinking of using the vit a/c fan as extra airflow when in deep sand etc, only on a toggle switch maybe together with a temp sender.
