RWC problems

Hey guys,

im thinking of buyin a 4x4 (sierra 1992) off a mate of mine but it doesnt have a RWC coz his tyres are bigger than 15% of the original. the car is registered though. whats the deal? can i buy the car? what do i need to do so that i can purchase the car legally with all the certificates? how much will it cost? i know he has massive tyres with 15-20mm treads (if i remember correctly). All the mods that he has put on the car have been done by a mechanic so i think that means that they have been engineered.

You CAN NOT buy a car (registered) if it doesnt have a RWC (safety certificate) as you need the safety cert to transfer the rego over to your name. It is also illegal to sell a registered car without a safety cert too I think.

What you have to do is simple...make the car roadworthy, 100% street legal and then get a safety cert. As for how much it will cost, I wouldnt have a freakin clue, as you havent given any details on what mods the vehicle has.

A mechanic and an engineer are 2 completely different things...so double check on the engineering side of things. If it is engineered it will have an engineers certificate and a mod plate attached in the engine bay somewhere on the firewall.

The limit is 15mm, not 15%.

As noted, done by a mechanic isn't the same as "engineered" - and "engineered" doesn't mean jack without mod plates and/or reports.

The regulations vary by state - don't hold your breath for the National Code of Practice to become adopted nationwide. Where are you?

Get a set of standerd wheels from the wrecker or someone you know who will lend you a set, get the safety cert and once youve regoed it put the bigger wheels back on

Or you can buy my standard size all terrain tyres x4 on rims for $150 to get it road legal. I'm in brisbane too.

Just buy it and drive it in his name till you can get the RWC, just write up a letter saying your using the car to cover him

i dont think he's gonna sell it for another couple of months anyways (he wants about $6 000 for it) but i'm looking to get one as soon as i get another job.
