couple of quick mq questions

Post by macca81 »

as im only new to the whole patrol thing, im hopeing i could have a few things cleared up for me. one i found after disconecting my swaybar and finding my tires scrub a flap of metal that sits sortof over the back of the indicators, like it was cut out of the body to make room for them but rather than take it off the designers just bent it back abit...

Image
this badly drawn pic is what it looked like b4 i bent it out of the way... well sortof what it looked like....

Image
Image
this is an actual pic of it after i bent it. is it still there for a reason? or did they just get lazy and not cut it off (like i will when i can be bothered dragging out the 4-inch).

Image
the other thing is i found this bolt on the front of the chassie, facing backwards, only on left-hand side... anyone know what its for?

The bolt in the last pic should be where your steering dampener should be!

yeah mate, thats where your steering damper goes.. get one..

the other flap/bent metal looks like has been ripped by tire scrubbing, and id weld back up if i were you. Or, someones modded the indicators into the bull bar itself and bent the metal out of the way. either way, they beloy on the body, not the bar... well they used to anyways.

cheers

the idicators are where they are ment to be, and the only reason the flaps are where they are now is because i got the multigrips to them, b4 they where curved ever so nicely, done all proper like, and just waiting to get attacked by wheels with flex...

does not having a damper actualy do anything bad to the handling?? seeing as i havnt driven it with one, and without it seems fine to me...

dunno if it effects handeling, but will effect hitting rocks when off roading, and the steering wheel getting ripped out of your hands.

Your wheels rub on those plates? i find that rather strange, as iam running 32 inch simexs (more like 33 inch real) and they dont rub at all.

cut that bit of steel off, but bend an edge all the way around it so the remaining bits are still solid. Or better yed bend and attach e a bit of angle to it. Its not a real important bit of steel anyway

as for your steering, without the damper, you will feel more shock and vibes through the steering wheel. it will wobble alot more when it goes over uneven ground, and will jerk the steering more violently when you hit roskc and ruts offroad.

Yeah its not real important...........

Its just there to stop rocks , sticks , or any other object that the front tyres can pickup and throw at the back of the plastic indicators thus shattering em into a few bits that can be superglued back together provided you know when the rock actually hit it and you stopped and picked up all the broken bits and in doing so saving yourself a few bucks from having to open an account with nissan for a regular supply of front left & right indicator assemblies

Nah ....... their not real important at all ;)

generally, you wont have much of an issue forward of the wheel.
unless you drive 100km/h in reverse :D

if indeed that is a problem, its much easyer to bend up a small bit of sheet behind the indicator, like the tin plate that protect the 40 series rear lights.

well as i drive thumbs-out, and only occasionaly loose the steering wheel, i think ill save my $$ and live without a dampener.

as for the metal, its going.

vanne, im running 33's atm with sway bars disconected, if i re-connected them id have no probs, but i like that bit of extra flex :D i never knew the plates existed untill 2 days after disconecting them.

yer there is just a hole/grommet in the floor the wiring goes through. some goes right to the gearbox and transfer case for the reverse/4wd switches and the rest goes left to the back for the lights im pretty sure.

this is no longer just a couple of 'quick' questions i have decided :P

right this thing came with my bus, it was just sitting under the passenger seat, i assumed it was a spare air filter at a glance, but i have recently had a look at it and have changed my mind, tho im not sue just what it is tho...
Image
Image
and this little bit is a piece of rubber that looks like it could work as a kinda one-way valve or something ?? :? Image

then there is this button just next to the steering collum, when i press it the injection pump control mech moves, but it will neither start the engine, nore will it kill it (thort to start with it mite be a kill switch...)
can anyone shed some light please??:D

Good call on the pre filter, that is definatly the bottem half of a pre filter, dould be the top half, does it have a oval sort of shape cut out on one side?

yeah it should be fine to run just the pre cleaner, lots of people only run it and makes it easier to seal it up good when you run a snorkel.

The pre filter is just a normal air filter just make sure you keep it clean, But that goes with out saying

just as i thought, was just curious.... i will only run the precleaner once i get an intercooler for the old girl, just not sure what size to run and how much to up the boost to compinsate for the lost pressure by running an intercooler

as i said, to the injection pump control mech...

turning the key pushes diesel to the engine already, so y have a button that pumps it aswel?

when driving and pushing the button its like the engine is killed for about a tenth of a sec b4 continuing on its merry way...
