I like the way Ray is ready to flame someone yet if you buy an engine off one of his mates and call him to find out what condition it is in he will lie to you...well either lie or he really knows nothing.
My surfs problems all started when I put in a motor that I bought from one of his mates that was suppose to be in great condition and looked after 100%.....it lasted not even 3 months, half a dozen cracks in the head, oil leaking out of everywhere
The surf site does have a lot of solutions to a lot of questions.....but not all. There are a lot of great people on there that are willing to help find your problem to the end.
Then there are others that will flame you and tell you that you are lying about your problems for attention right Jez?
If you havent already bought a surf....dont buy one, they are a great car. I still have mine, however they also come with a lot of heartache and problems. Unless you are mechanically minded you need to be rich to own a surf

You rang me chasing some info on someone's engine that you were looking at buying. The person was someone that brought his vehiicle in for servicing. This person was also a friend of mine, but he was no more a friend of mine than you were at the time so I had no prefered loyalty to either of you.
I explained to you that my knowledge of his engine internals was limited........as I only serviced it. That means changed his oil and filter and carried out a basic safety inspection. At no time did I dismantle his engine to inspect the internals! I told you that as far as I was aware the engine was ok. I test drove it on a number of occasions and it drove like any one of the other 4 or 5 surfs I have driven before. No better and certainly no worse.
I also explained to you the fact that the owner of this vehicle complained to me a couple of times via telephone that his engine had used oil. He confirmed (also via telephone) that the vehicle definately didnt blow any excessive smoke of ANY colour and that it was not leaking externally. He also confirmed that this problem seemed to happen for a couple of weeks then disappear. Upon his next booking for servicing I asked if he would like me to look into this strange oil consumption issue but he decided not to worry about it as it was so intermittent. I stress again that I told you all this information when you called me.
So, having explained this here, on OL (remember I told you this a couple of times when you first decided to bring me into your dramatic episode), could you please explain to me how you think I have lied about anything?

that you CAN put a 2LTLL manual into a 2LTE auto!
Either way, the point is this Michelle. Your previous engine died. You decided to take a cheaper option of buying a used second hand engine privately for about $1500 that obviously came with no warranty. My inital advice to you was to buy through a wrecker that could offer you some sort of warranty.....you made your choice. Money was an issue and I respect that. But what I dont respect is that after having problems you decided to turn around and blame anyone but yourself for the poor decision you made.

To the mod's please don't lock it as it just keeps getting better i want to see the reply and as for surfs they are expensive to fix and i wouldn't own one after doing repairs at work on a fair few see the light and get a solid axle lux will perfom better than the surf ever will and heaps cheaper on parts/pannels and more around

Yes you did tell me it had used oil on one or two occasions. However by the time I had done 3000 kms in it I was putting in a litre of oil every 300 kms.

March 20th I got her back, the beginning of June she died in the ass...
Its now official, its died in the ass.
I managed to start it this afternoon and it took over 2 kms to get to 60 ks.
I got to Ballarat offroad and I cant remember everything they said but they said that its been under so much pressure that the oil is bypassing the cylinders and going to the intake manifold and is being pushed out of everywhere.
We tried to start it with the oil cap off and as it was trying to turn over, oil was pumping out like a huge fountain all over the bonnet.
We put the lid back on and after a lot of effort got it started and took off each hose individually and each hose was spraying a lot of smoke and oil.
They told me not to drive it anymore.....well thats easy said, cos on the way home I could not get it to go over 70 kms and even that was an effort to keep it there. (and its mainly downhill home)
That ticking sound was getting louder and louder too.
I could quote a lot more posts inbetween these, but I have a busy life and dont have time.
The slow taking off got so bad within a month (problem solved post removed) that I could not move off from a slight incline and had to put the car into 4wd to actually move. I could not turn the car off as I knew she would not start and would take two sets of keys with me and leave her locked up running in carparks....that was prolly stupid, I shoulda left her unlocked in hope someone stole her

Yeah, I took a risk. A risk trusting people on the net. There was no way you can honestly sit there behind your computer screen after driving that car and tell me that it was fine. As you can now see the problem was from day one, and got worse over the 2 months the engine was in the car.

It comes down to this.....I gave you honest information in regards to my limited dealings with his engine and you have decided that the only explanation for things going pear shaped is that I must have lied to you. Feel free to use this reasoning if it makes you feel better about yourself. wow hasn't this ignited into a hot debate,
I've only had mine two years and I am very happy with it. The tech support etc off the surf forum has been great.
Two points:
1. They are a fairly complex vehicle due the luxury level to be enjoyed, they are getting on in years and therefore are reaching the age where small annoying thing can happen, but with basic preventative maintenance it doesn't become a drama. If you don't have any mechanical aptitude, I would probably not recommend them as SOME, not ALL mechanics I have seen stitch right into people for mechanical repairs due to a few factors, imported, diesel, turbo and lack of intellect. I wish that this minority of parts changes could be eliminated for the good of all vehicle owners.
2. Buyer demographics, when these first landed in Australia via the grey import scheme, they offered top value for money, but then is attracted every gold chained caryard maggot to bring them in wind back the speedos and flog them off on hp to people who likes the look of them and had no idea what the differences where between the local and imported model apart from sunroof and cd players. These type of nongs then couldn't afford the maintenance required or had problems and were stitched up by the aformentioned parts changers, and consequently went down the wreckers path etc or in my case I bought mine with no motor and sorted it from there.
The corrosion issue is valid, when heads or gaskets start to let go the coolant is incredibly corrosive and eats away at the combustion chamber and bore, I have seen quite a few, if your surf is tarting to use coolant, fix it now, may only cost you a vrs and headbolt set.
Cooling overheating can be a problem, easy fix, new 4 core rad, flush block, new water pump, thermostat and hoses, plus good coolant.
Power operated stuff, wd40 all connectors, silicon spray all tracks ond guides. if problems check wiring continuity first before body modules etc,
Engine get rid of EGR, clean manifold of gook gunk, put good free flowing exhaust, new glowies and reco injectors, they run very sweet.
In summary they are a good affordable comfortable family four wheel drive, if you want more than beach and light offroad, don't try and polish a turd, get a solid axle lux etc, but for a great car to commute and get up the beach so far 10/10, I don't miss my early luxes cruisers at all, surf has better ride, handling, seats, a/c and fuel economy,

This was originally a Euro Import with 2.7ltr petrol but the donk gave it up after 400,000klm and I popped in a standard 2.4ltr.
Electric sunroof, IFS(rules devilman)
I have used this car for work and play from towing 1500kg trailers on WA beaches to towing a 8x6 boggie wheel trailer full of bricks for work.
The 2.4 is a little under powered at times but this is still an exceptional car offroad 2 up with all your camping and fishing gear.
Have done many runs out through the Brindabella Ranges west of Canberra, pretty steep demanding hills. Never let me down.
I would highly recommend a Forerunner or Surf to anyone in the market for a capable, flexible and adaptable offroader. As for the options available on the surf over the forerunner-99% window dressing but worth the xtra bucks for Toorak Touring.
There are plenty of capable 4wds out there now but most are liberated shopping trolleys.
Hope you get what your after.

I had a 3lt surf once and it was great.....until it cracked the head 4 months later and it only had 185,000km ahhahahah yeah!!!
In regards to teh Surf forum there is a lot of help available on there and some great ppl but there are also a few that cannot handle the fact that surfs have their problems and ppl who ask b4 they buy should be given the facts. Yes all cars have their problems but it just seems that surfs seem to have a lot more!!!! I own a GQ now and it has been fantastic. Yes i know the 2.8's are gutless so i bought a 4.2 petrol instead. I'm also aware that they crack heads when on lpg (mine is on gas) but they are very easy to fix and you do not have to be a "CERTIFIED DENSO DIESEL MECHANIC" to fix them. NIssan owners know of the problems are dont mind telling ppl about them.
