GQ vs GU

Post by Lawrence »

Just a few questions regarding both

1. Which rides better (over corrugations, potholes, blacktop)?

2. I know it is basically the same suspension, but were there any small changes?

3. Is the performance of the TD42 the same in both or is it a bit better in the newer vehicle?

4. Which has the better seating position ?

i personally prefer the gu for comfort and stronger cv's but that is about it.
I prefer the gq as a 4wd because it isn't as wide or heavy and the electronic 4.2 diesel is just something i couldn't deal with. But thats just me,i love the old gq.

The only thing that went electronic on the 4.2 was the addition of the tps for emissions. Auto gq's also had a tps for the auto computor
hardly an issue if you dont like electronics..

As stated tho gu is more comfortable and modern. and came with a factory turbo diesel so i guess it does go better.
But after having to chose between the 2 for what i do i chose the gq because is is just as good offroad, if not better due to less weight lower roof line and skinnyier body. only weakness is the cv's (hardly a weakness tho if compared to toyotas offereings of the last 15 years)

If i wanted a comfy late model tourer id get a gu but for a play truck ill keep my gq and just put a gu front diff in if it cv's ever become an issue.

Oh and whole gq bodys can be had for about 500 bucs. and panels for stuff all too. another big advantage for a play truck. Just incase things do go wrong

I have a GU and a GQ.
Q1 GU definately rides better smoother quieter and less rattles!

Q2 the only difference ive come across is the rear panhard GU had
a much larger bush at one end.

Q3 same motor for my money although later GU models came with
intercoolers.

Q4 GU has much better front seats, GU rear seats have more room
between seats but GQ has more cargo space at the rear. GU has
just enough cargo space depth for an 80ltr wacoe.
i got nothin

i found the layout better in a gu also the sitting position compaired to a gq, but ive also found a 80 series is better than both of them...... :finger:

All down to the suspension.

differnet configurations in the GQ and the GU - too many other variables.
4. Which has the better seating position ?

No it isnt only 2.8 and 3.0l are electronic as for the seats you oviously havent sat in a 80 for 10hrs or more but then i have replaced the seats in my GU with after market seats as i reckon their crap as well

good to know.

as for sitting in the seat of a 80 for 10 hours, yes i have.ive driven non stop to adelaid from the sunshine coast and then back all in 3 days. the seats in the 80 are better than the gu for sure, just the sitting position is not.

what do you want the car for going around australia, bush bashing, you have a familly of how many?

i have a 7 seat gq (lifted with big wheels) i have a wife and 2 kids we travel from brissy to melboure and any where in between (i want to go north but the missis does not   )
my only fault is the front seats are cramped for a car this size i have a body lift so i am considering cuting the tunel down and moving the seats to center of wheel at least!
i have driven a few gu's and the seating is much better ond they go way better (thats why I am putting a chev in mine) but to much electrics and plastic for me I like it ruff and ready that way your not scared to give it a go

as for the price mechanicly its very similar apart from a computer to ruin your day so the extra dollars in the gu is for the extra plastic and weight of ???

gq n gu are the same engine, same performance with the same accesseries, gu has bigger fuel pump n a tiny turbo but it is cheap to turbo a gq n do a pump mod to out perform factory turbo gu. gu also came out non turbo n they were just as slow as gq. I would buy a gu now cos buy the time you fit gu front diff n steer box to a gq you might aswell buy a gu

My friend has a 93 SWB GQ Non turbo, its a manual gear box model and has a TP on pump,it also has a control unit in left side kick panel which is for the pump he's been told.It doesnt need the control unit to run, when he found it(was badly corroided not working at all)did some research tracked one down, runs smoother now ,not sure what it does though.

I had a GU 4.2 intercooled for 3 years. Now I have a GQ 4.2 turbo.

The GU was far more comfortable
More room inside and much quieter for the long trips
The main things that have changed between the two have generally been bigger and stronger (even between GU models) with the exception of the paper thin body panels which almost dint when you look at them

If I could afford it I'd buy another GU tommorrow.

the gq is cramped and the seats are total garbage, but the earlier model gq's had stronger pistons apparently(according to nissan cleveland) i also like the smaller body of the gq over the larger yet comfy gu for offroading
