Silicone removal Q?

Post by sudso »

Anyone know what dissolves old silicone?

I want to remove some from a fibreglass canopy ready for painting.

Cheers, sudso

i think silicone is based on acetic acid, so that might be worth a go

There is'nt much out there that can get the crap off, we used to use silicon remover but this was for fresh stuff, and we only used it on our hands  .

use vinegar, if you can find cleaning grade vinegar even better. It's about the only stuff that will dissolve silicone.

Thanks I'll raid the missus pantry. If it doesn't work I'll source some cleaning grade.

cheers

vinegar contains acetic acid. Selleys do make a silicone remover. You paint it on then wait for it to do its job. Probably much cheaper to try the vinegar first.

petrol (or just about any solvent) will soften it and eat through it - but it takes a while...

Yes it most definatley is I use it every day, but would be a BIG no no to put that gear anywhere near a f/g canopy. I would try something like isopropyl alcohol if you can get. Its good for breaking down stuff without being too aggresive
