I agree with beretta here.. yes gauge is a few bux, but about 1/30th the cost of an engine rebuild - cheap insurance. We use vdo gauges. Temps pre turbo should be no higher than 700c.
We tried my n/a td42 on the dyno with a egt guage in the manifold, it went to 790c and stayed there under full load at 100kmh. It took about 3-4 mins to get that.
