All in all great event great food we had a ball ... we know what we did wrong and i'm pretty sure we wouldn't do it again!!! all a big learning curve .... but i'll tell you what the last 2 hours were bloody hard ! and then when my navi made me do SS2 and SS1 in reverse to get back to camp !!!! fists almost flew. But you have to love the BIG RED TOOL he gets it right most of the time!!! Alister whats the damage? sorry we didn't want to team up with you ... its just that you might have beaten us !!! we might even team up with you next time or something!

Hi all,
Thanks Rudi & Hobzee for a fantastic event - we had an absolute ball but just a bit annoyed that we couldn't finish the event.
Didn't think that we did too bad considering that we had to pull the pin just after the hill at waypoint three on the second half.

SS1 - we drove with no problems, SS2 had a go but needed to winch as we had completely chewed up the inside wall of one of our tyres & had a hole the size of a tennis ball in it. It was still on the rim (just!!) so after winching over the first rock ledge we just put all into it with lockers in & drove the rest of the stage of 3 tyres while bouncing off the buggered rim & tyre. Finished at the top then replaced it & continued on.

That was until when we got to the caution on stage 2.
Jono had a few problems with this hill and broke a CV - Justin, Schafer, Smithie etc helped him change it in no time but Schafer must of been getting hungry in the mean time & decided to chew on one of the huge moths (they have crunchy heads apparently!).

After Jono got through - we decided to give it a go but sand was so soft we just sunk the back end in & broke a CV in the same place. We took the hub out, left the lockers in but still not enough guts to get up the hill so we winched pretty much most of the way. In the mean time we had all the other teams starting to catch up to us - sorry everyone for slowing you down! When we got to the top of the hill we had issues getting the hub off to change the cv which included breaking allen keys so we decided to call it a night.
Got back to camp - had a chat then hit the road to drive home.

Apart from a broken CV, mangulated tyre & rim, dented rear quarter - not much else went wrong. Thats life.

All in all not bad for the owner of the car sitting next to me in the passenger seat as winchy & being able to drive someone elses car like it was mine. Hopefully the winchy had as much fun as I did.

What happens at with the SS3 points and we like many others were waiting to have our crack and the SS was closed so no chance to have a go and get the points. I believe only 4 trucks had a go at it, so what happens with the points ????.

Wasn't back down SS1 the correct route back anyway !!!!! I remember talking to my Navi on the way down that it would be a good track to drive up only to get to the bottom ( daytime now ) thinking it was a secret checkpoint on seeing the marshals 4B's then realizing we had already driven it. ( things can look real different blasting up a track in the dark with the stop watch going, driving all night and seeing the same track in daylight through tired eyes in the opposite direction ) .

Still had a great time doing the event, done an interesting recovery of my team mate ( rear mounted winches are ace ) Hilux on SS2 and replacing a CV at Midnight is just the best thing to be doing on a Saturday Night.

Thanks to Hobsey, Rudes and all the marshals for putting it together and making it work.

Another great event Rudi, Hobzee and all invovled!
The bit of rain on saturday killed the dust down a fair bit and made some of the tracks a little more interesting so we heard.

Macca and I were marshalling at a secret checkpoint near 'Wally' with a roast, a couple of bundys and good fire to relax by for the night!
We had the first car through about 11.30pm, then the next about 1.30pm followed by the rest of the cars till about 3am.

Although the roast was cooked by about 1.20am, so I knew there would be a few cars coming through after the campoven lid was lifted and the smell swept through the trees to attract the cars! Pity Macca was in bed, so I fed his half of the roast beef to competitors coming through!

Top work too from the guys in the white Disco who came through our checkpoint at 8am sunday morning, after doing 2 cv's and a rear axle on one of the SS's, going back to Ballarat to repair it then back again to continue the event! Well done guys! I bet a few would of giving up after having that much bad luck!
We could hear a bit over the uhf throughout the night to with a couple of rollovers and other problems.
Everyone that came through us were having a great time, even if they were getting a bit tired! Well done!

How funny was Lockee bringing up a pair of footy boots for Schaffer, only to find they were both 2 left feet... no wonder they were on special!!.... you idiot! But gez it was funny!

Thanks again to Rudi, Hobzee, competitors, the cooking crew and fellow marshalls! Its always a great weekend!

Guys i was at the stage at the time it was cancelled. I rang Rudi, at 4am, to confirm the cancellation and conditions. He told me that the stage manager's decision to cancel it was upheld and the NOONE will recieve any points for the stage. The two cars that had completed it and one DNF will not be counted in the results.
The only points up for grabs were the points for the two cards on the trees on that track, which you were still able to find.

well done for putting on a great event.

the navigation was a lot easier than the pajero so was fairly good, although still missed bits.

ss1 i was going great until my driving got a bit sloppy at the top and i missed the gear changing into 3rd after the rocky bit.

ss2 had to winch the start then i was doing great until i did a cv whilst stuck real bad rock with both front wheels in the air with the gearbox on a rock and a tyre came down at nose and when bang.

ss3 i was 3rd car onto the track and it was massively chewed out from the first two cars, and then i chewed it out some more, think i had 4-5 winches and drove it in 20 mins, me and delbrocco the only cars to drive it before they closed the stage, and we got no points for completing it

ss4 i got stuck on some big rocks and wrecked the winch, nothing comfirmed yet, but looks like i burnt out the motor and busted all the internals, as the brake was fully sticking out the side of the housing on a bad angle and there was no drive at all.

in all, got a fair amount of damge and screwed up every stage, oh well these things happen.

wallet isnt going to be happy for the repairs, might take a while to get the car back to normal with the winch repairs or new winch

if anyone got any pics, could they send them to peterbutcher@netspace.net.au i saw a few cameras going off.

We went down ss1 on the way back to camp aswell (funny how the shortest root between way points can be done). About half way down it I thought this looks to easy and gay to have been an ss.

second car was Dallas, he had a lot of winching and attempts and eventually dnf'd before he turned of the main track i think.

I was hitting the hill from the bottom in 2nd gear with foot to the floor with lockers in, but still no go. the car kept bouncing around like a bucking bull. Then i kept trying to take of at the rocky section halfway up the hill, i was getting further each time, but too much strain on the drive train, the cvs arent happy.

the marshalls said that if one of the most powerful cars get up and the condition the track was deteriorating rapidly, there was no real option but to close the stage. altought it still could have been done in my opionion, but just lots of winching involved like i had to. being first car would have been a massive advantage.

I can only quote what i heard, and that was the marshals saying the stage was closed as a stage but you could continue to find the cards.

I watched hottie and helped dallas recover. We were keen to have a crack as i said but in there defence i could see it becoming an half hour stage for most cars. 20 cars times half hour is ten hours. That meant the stage would have closed at about 2 in the arvo....
