awesome, then he'd get paint flaking and going in the engine:D
I'm getting my intercooler and intake pipe made out of mild steel then getting powdercoated...

Paint flaking.. how is that ment to happen unless u put a very shit or a big pile of it in there ??

Why not just go stainless steel? It would probably cost the same as what you intend to do.
Dont expect mere proof to sway my opinion.

i'd rather it flutter than sound like it has a cold.
That fluttering is called reversion and is very bad for the turbo.

Yeah i was told flutter was bad and then people say it does stuff all to the turbo and so on... it's really comes down to your own oppion on the matter... it's like the hiclone debate some say it makes a big diff some say it's a complete waste of money..

Yeah I hate the sound of BOV, I never ran one on my old Nissan Skyline and the turbo only lasted about 30,000km, if you think about it, it is bad, its the air trying to get past back out after the throttle has closed and the only place to go is back out the intake. The noise is actually the air going past the compressor blades of the turbo and out through the intake pipe. On my next car I ran, and simply plumbed them back into the intake pipe before the turbo, no ricer noises then:D

I would of thought some sort of blow off valve is common sense. Just think about it :!: :!:

Plus you would just set up a plumb back style if you didnt want the ricer sound.

i have a question when i give ny gq tb42 a flogging on the road pushing 150ish driving hard etc when i stop i can smell gear oil front and rear of the car i have no oil leaks so i figure the oil is just cooking in side those huge diffs/g,box and the smell is just from the breathers, after flogging that machine you have built do you get the same smell.
(and i say MACHINE with a smile :D ;) nice)
and who here has had/driven a v8 patrol and a turbo tb42 as i was going to put a sbc in mine but with all these turbo'd rb30, tb42 running around it all a little tempting as i have a sierra with a ca18det and i love it when the turbo spools up.
there is a guy on here who has a lwb gq with a rb26, with, im told 800hp at the wheels, im also told its on the front cover of zoom magazine at present, went looking for it at 2 servos and a newsagent havent found a current copy yet, but would be interesting.

as for blow of valve i run one on my sierra but i'm also running 17lbs boost, it spools again so much quicker and less presure on the turbo i think as the air has some where to go i am also converting it to auto 4sp from a vl turbo jatco box as i cant change the gears fast enough do you nutter gq have this problem now or do the 35's gear it up enough to extend the gear changes

I'm so tempted to stop looking for a diesel now and do this, as RB motors don't seem to use anywhere near as much fuel as the larger 4.2L petrols even modified!!! My old RB25DEt i had made 400rwhp and i still got 10L\100km on the hi-way and 16L\100km around town with spirit driving and I've been told the larger Petrol motors have trouble doing that.

has there been an answer about the intake pipe material? Is mild steel ok or are my concerns justifiable?

I can't see how mild steel will be a major issue, a lot of intercooler kits still use mild steel. Mild steel doesn't hold the heat like Stainless does and is actually prefered by some manifactures. Eventually it will end up with a slight oil coating over it anyway (from crank case gases)meaning a lesser chance of rust. I've owned cars with mild steel intercooler piping with no problems.

Use mild steel and just paint it.

I was going to use stainless how much diff is there between alloy and stainless i know alloy will get rid of heat much better but is it going to make much of a difference?

No.

In fact, ideally you want to insulate the piping after the intercooler to stop underbonnet temps reheating the cooled air, but it will make sweet f ' all difference.

some of the intake piping on my ca18det is mild steel i painted the outside didnt touch the inside and there is always a oily film in there and look out most standed turbo'd cars they run mild steel you dont see flash stainless/alloy under a standed skyline with "special" blue elbos etc...!!

you should run crank breather into a catch can cos if you end up on your side or upside down the oil fills the induction pipes then the turbo n if you real unlucky then pumped into the engine = bent con rod an maybe farked turbo, this is a big problem on factory GU set ups as the breather goes in just before the turbo

My turbo is so small It doesn't take bugger all time to spool back up on gear changes, mild steel is no problem for the cooler pipes commonly used.
