Jackshaft uni change
Jackshaft uni change
Ok, Got a bad clunking sound coming from my driveline. Jacked the rear up, disconnected the front shaft and put it in first and it was still there. That rules out front axle/driveshaft.
Next, I disconnected the rear shaft and it was still there ruling out the rear axle/shaft.
This leaves gbox and tcase. Removed tcase from vehicle and pulled out the jackshaft. started the car up and put it in first and the clunk was gone.
So it is either the jackshaft or the tcase right? Now, I figure changing uni's would be a damn sight easier than pulling apart a tcase so out come the handy circlip pliers and check it out. wtf? no circlips!
I also spun the flanges on the tcase by hand and I couldnt hear any sounds not that I can spin it that fast by hand
Which leads me to believe it is the jackshaft..........unless someone on here can tell me otherwise
So my question is: How the fark do you remove and replace the uni's in an 89 sierra jackshaft? If it would help I can put up pics.

All I can see internally is one rubber and one copper(?) washer. Ive rotated them around the uni cup and cant see any break in the circumference. Short of a cutting disc I cant see how to get them off. Is there a trick to determining if it has internal/external circlips?

No position where they might have been.
Both ends are the same.
No clips are visible on the any of the yokes/unis.
There is a small amount of movement but not alot. I figured since it was out it wouldnt hurt to change them regardless.
After going back over your questions, I feel like a dumbarse
I guess the question should have been: How do you change internal circlipped uni joints?

Sorry dude, I dont really understand what you are saying.MART wrote:So are they internal clips , cause i think you said one was gold , if they are just remove and change , also do you know how to change them , Cheers Paul.
Yes, I think they must be internal clips, but Im by no means sure.
It does look like its made of copper but again, Im not positive.
I cant see how to remove them as they dont have a break in the circumference of the washer?
No, I dont know how to change them, hence my question.

No manual unfortunately. Looking at the unis on my driveshafts, they are all external but Im fairly sure that the jackshaft ones are internals.
My camera is with my girlfriend till tomorrow but I will put some pics up then.
So, how are unis with internal circlips removed???

Re: unis
10mm is quite a gap!want33s wrote:Mine is 89 and all unis have internal circlips. The gap in the clip is only about 10mm so check all the way around. The gap may have rotated to the inside.
Assuming you mean 1mm Ive checked them all over pretty comprehensively. Having said that however, They were pretty covered in gunk and I was checking them under fairly low light.
They're soaking in degreaser at them moment so I'll check them again tomorrow.

Here is a pic. Its not a Suzuki Uni but its close enough. See how the clips aren't a full circle? There is a gap (in this pic about 20mm as this is a Holden 6 cyl uni)) ......
Ok here's a couple of pics:
Ive removed the two washers using a screwdriver on the horizontal axis of the uni. You can see the washers on the vertical axis. they go right round so they aint no circlip
This is the view from the top. No circlip here either
At this stage I think Im just going to go to a wrecker and get a another jackshaft with the externally clipped unis and save the headaches. Unless someone here can let me know where Im going wrong?

Thats what I wanted to hear. Thanks mate!MART wrote:If that is a standard jackshaft , somebody has played with it , shouldn,t cost much for a new one , you won't get that apart and if you did it wouldn't use it , Cheers Paul

jackshaft uni
That is a factory pressed unit that has to be machined to remove. Toyota have used this type of uni for years on non Australian built cars. Uni can be replaced at cost but I'd replace the whole shaft with a replaceable uni type.
