Sounds like you had the worst experience of all Piglet.
Lockdown for three days, no event and a bad crash to boot.
What, haven't you ever done lines of International Roast off a hookers back with $100 notes?

OBC

Post by Hobzee »

What a bummer for everyone.

You know I dont think a refund is in order.. Motorsport has always been this way. I remember being at an Ateco cancelled on the Friday night and no refunds. Stacks of us (Roger Smith and I last OBC) break down on the opening days and sit out an event with no refunds. The costs of running an event dont just go away if it is cut short. The weather was only getting worse and it was a RTA issue re transportation when it was all said and done. I feel sorry for everyone and I believe this would have been a very tough and heart breaking decision.

And so a refund wouldn't be on the cards in Cliffhanger either unless it never actually went ahead. But as we have bitumen to the front gate we would need another excuse to call it off, like too much mud ... NOT!

Chins up guys, just think that under all that caked on mud is a straight truck .. except for Piglets. You have some fixing to do fella..

Glad its not me FLYING out of BH tomorrow.. Going to be kinda bumpy up there.

Just returned from presentation  Had to make the long drive up worth it

Very interesting event results & no doubt will be debated for some time to come.

Spoke to many competitors and opinions were many and varied.

I find it hard for a winner of the OBC to be announced without really enduring and surviving a "one week of sheer hell"!

Granted that the organiser's only had 3 stages with results that everyone had the opportunity to compete in and the Thai's were the best team on these 3 stages.

But to win without, allegidly(sp?), being able to navigate and without a fuel range of more than what 20 litres will provide, both integral parts of competing in the challenge, it's certainly a questionable result by many.

Nothing against the Thai guys. They have done nothing wrong except for being ill-prepared, which surely the organiser's need to except some resposibilty for :?

A huge  for making the long trek to compete in a foreign country.

At the end of the day the result has to be thought of in the context (conditions) in which it was won.

Just my 2cents worth

Cheers, The Fish ;)

I heard the Thai teams had a support vehicle and spotters advising them in regards to winching, also It's been mentioned their vehicles were far from regulation(some safety issues). Any body know how much truth to them?

I've heard exactly the same thing. Apparently one Zuk didn't even have a firewall....not to mention the independant braking which was evident with their impressive turning circle. One was rumoured to have the winch cable running through the cab....only rumours at this stage though.....

I'm not questioning Paul's decision to cancel the event - it is a very hard thing to do... but does anyone else see the irony of an event like this, with the toughst of tough trucks, being cancelled because of a bit of rain.
If the thai teams were of rainforest challenge ilk they probably felt like they were in normal weather conditions.

BTW refunds - no chance. despite the event being cancelled all the costs of staging the event have still been incurred regardless of the impromptu finish.

I'm with you on that one Fish!!!

You can't possibly have a result if the event wasn't completed!

As for the thai's, if all speculation is true and they have brake assit's etc cable through the cab (unsafe for a start) wouldn't that class as a rock buggy and not a registered type vehicle here in OZ??, which would make them ineligable to compete in OBC as all vehicles A: have to be registered
B: have to be a complete vehicle!

Is this not correct?????????????????????

Good effort to all those who made the trek to broken hill, Wishing you all a safe return to your homes.

How's your head Piggy???

Cheers Lepar. :?

It was cancelled because of RTA road closeures so impossible to transport from property to property

And yes ive still got the car so ill be at the Ateco

If the Thai vehicle wasn't up to spec then why didn't people protest about it from the beginning? So they won, big deal its not like it was a full OBC, they won 3 stages that everyone ran so therefore they won what was run. Simple. Yes it is a sad thing that the event was cancelled and sponsors didn't get their money's worth but that is the risk sponsorship takes on board and the fact it was an event cancelled by events outside the control of the organisers is surely goin to make sense to them.

At least this way many of the vehicles make it back in one piece and sets them up for next year nicely. To those who broke their vehicles commiserations, I hope you can find the drive to fix them and give it another go next year.

Didn't they disqualify Sandy for simply having a modified cam a few years back, just prior to announcing the scores. Looks like double standards..

Not complaining just stating fact's Sheety.

I understand the issue was raised to the organisers (by more than one competitor) at the begining. Not sure if this was pre or post scrutineering, but it was raised as far as I'm aware.

Anyway, its all heresay until the lads get back from BH.
