Thanks for controlling our passages you were great!
But serious yourself and Al were awesome, certainly didn't expect it, but I definately appreciated it! We had a blast and you guys definateyl contributed to it being a good time.

This was my 2nd year at the obc and would have to say without trying to offend other group leaders that Ad's and Al have set a standard that could be impossible for others to follow, you guys were unbelievable, thanks for a top couple of days.
As for the the actual event Paul and Sharyn did a top job with what they had to work with, congrats to them, and the result while not a true indication realistically the only one the could be given as we had all only done those 3 stages together. They probably could of also given east and west places, as group a&b had done east and c&d the west, just a thought from a competitor. Anyway it is what it is, well done to the Thai's, i will definatly be back next year and am happy with my 12th position, with a few top 10 stages.

Any news/update on Jane & Peter Car 19....they had a v. unfortunate accident at Denian/shifting sands and needed major front end repairs @ Silvercity 4wd, to be able to drive their Daily Driver (awesome shopping trolley) home to Qld.

Were back after a rather dissapointing week spent stuck in Broken Hill. The rivers rose very quickly which was great for the area and good to be able to see but really sucked arse as we were there to see some real 4wd action. Anyway my 1st bush camp was on the way home camped on the Murray (sorta like Viewmont) at Hattah and the highlight was having to drive Greenies GQ home from Calder Park after the trailer it was on blew the 2nd spare tyre!!

The car has a lot of damage , radiator, fan, winch bar, both inner and outer gaurds, radiator support pannel, bonnet, both front doors and chassis are damaged. As far as I am aware most of the parts were available it town.
Not sure if the car is mobile yet.

Can anyone tell me please what classes will be running in the OBC for 08. And how many cars were in the touring class this year? ( I think it was touring offered as well this year was'nt it?) and how many were in the Challenge class? Thanks, Nik.

Well what a interesting couple of weeks. I was Marshalling at Viewmont and the same thing happened as last yr. We drove everything no worrys. Then it turns to shit. What a bugger. And Zach even talked us into the new layout as the old one. Had the winch working pretty hard on 1 batt getting the ute across. So the new layout had us drive it in around 2min25. So we thought this should be good. Only problem is as per last yr. The mud got deep real quick. The teams that had to winch most did real well. And only just missed out on getting out the other side.
Mind you with that little tractor and worn out winches and batts on all our cars. It made for a very long night. Think we hit the sack some time around 6am, to get up at 7:30 to start fixing stuff.
I didnt see much of the morning stage. As myself and a couple of the other guys had to go fix the grader so the afternoon stage could be ran. What fun that was havent laughed so long in ages. And what is it with farmers leaving shit in the middle of paddocks when they have finished using it. Took abit to get it going after charging the batts of the Jeep and changing the front wheel. For info a Patrol bottle jack want lift a front grader wheel off the ground.
Once the thing was running we got the wheel changed and Brent drove it back to where the arvo stage was. But due to rain on the track we watched the grader drift around some of the corners, as it it was Rohans middy.
So once the grader was there the arvo stage was on. I was going to chase on a bike. But being a crap rider. Didnt think motor bike, wet paddocks and me mixed. So road shotgun with one of the medics in the chase car. After following the thais and bru for awhile they both pulled the pin. Due to over heating by all 3 teams and the thai's had no idea where they where. So with help from Bru (thanks mate, safed us heaps of time). the 3 teams made it back to camp.
All seemed to be going well, with most teams already at the lagoon by now. we took the short cuts, just as it started to piss down rain. Novice driver in the wet with her new car. Made for a very intresting trip. We got to the finish line just as Coops and Hummer where makeing hte final crossing. PGS and Nick M where up to the doors in mud and had to be dragged out (glad we fixed the grader).
So with fresh rain on the night stage. Kill Bill did a fantatic job to get as far as they did. Problem was with all hte rain. The grader was struggleing for traction and was starting to bog in. MMMM that not good. So with heavy rain still falling the night was cancelled.
Had a sleepin and watched a movie the next morn. Dont know why, we where just slackers for some reason.
But the arvo stage was set to be good. With the rain holding off. All teams gave it a good going. With storys of Rohan and Ivan racing across clay pans. And Rohan just stuffing around as he had time to waste. Since there winch was broke.
Was amazed at how many teams drove past the waypoints (near the stop go) only 2 out of 9 teams drove straight to it. Phil (car 10) didnt even make it that far when the alt broke, then the spare broke.
Well after every one finshed and called it quits. We found out we where on the first night of lock down. So that made for a nice day of doing nothing on Wed. Untill mid afternoon. When Schultzy got a phone call from the SES saying the roads are still closed and a huge storm had just hit Pooncarie and was heading nth. The decision was made to move the competitors to the shearing shed (gotta be better than a paddock) and the spectators got moved to High sandy ground.
The competitors must have thought wonders of the resort style accommodation. With most making use of the facilities of sit down flush toilets and hot showers.
While they where doing Graeme was sweet talked into cutting up a sheep for tea. Alan did a top job with getting the spuds and pumpkin on and fireing up the bbq for the lamb chops.
Also a couple of slabs of beer where made available to those interested in a beer. And no I dont know who got Linda started on the Bundy cans. We apologise for that.
Good news came on Thursday morning. Everyone is allowed out and back to broken hill. We arranged for the competitors to team up with the Spectator group to help them get back to Menidee where the black top started.
Then we had the task of packing up all our stuff while it still rained. We ended up leaving some time around 2pm. after another inch of rain falling, which made for an interesting drive.
FOund a motel in BH and then went to the presentation night. Then Friday had the long boring drive home.
Found out I had to goto work on saturday and sunday. Which suxed big time.

Both classes do everything (all stages etc) exactly the same, the only difference is the size of the tyres (35" for T class max.)and it also depends how your truck left the factory.....if it's with a turbo...then that's not classed as a mod!. Our swb has the original engine still and has 300+ thou on the clock!!! but it goes well. Managed to get all four wheels off the ground in the Xterain @ Denian...he he! and sh-t myself!......it bounced like a beach ball and just got higher with each bounce....sadly no one got a pic but the spectators seemed to appreciate it! That explained why they all hung out at that spot too.
We also weighed our truck at the PrologueQuarry fully loaded...... 2.86 tons!!!! I believe the Zooks weighed less than half that!.... so cutting off excess body weight and making the truck light as, is a must!

I am a keen 4wder and live near Broken Hill, servicing the surrounding area that is greater in size than Victoria. This week we had the Outback Challenge in the area, which was cancelled due to rain (boy did we need it!) and all dirt roads were closed as a result.
The event organisers persuaded both the RTA and the Central Darling Shire council to let both competitors, spectators and their vehicles, who were stuck out on competition areas, access to roads that were closed as they had not made any preparation whatsoever regarding the possibility of wet weather. The fine for driving on closed roads vary but most are more than $1000 per tyre, including spares. Some areas can also fine for the cost to repair the road, so why were these people exempt?
Even though I love 4wdriving and watching competitions, I would like to know who is going to pay for the repairs to these dirt main roads? The Menindee to Ivanhoe road was only just finished being graded 2 months ago, and was a 100km/h road. Now, due to the damage caused by being used when wet, when it dries out it will be chopped up 60km/h road. Out here we don't have the luxury of having sealed roads everywhere. I cannot believe that everyone expected to be allowed to use these roads at any time no matter what the weather is. Obviously your readers aren’t listening.
When it rains out here every thing shuts down and nothing happens until the roads are reopened. In this instance these roads will take at least a week to dry. I cannot believe that part of the communication towards the event did not include information relating to this. I am very disappointed with the organisers, as all they seemed concerned about was making sure that the event finished on time and that people where able to get back to their concrete jungle come Monday morning ready for work.
I hope that the competitors and spectators enjoyed cutting these roads up and in turn causing our rates to increase to repair these roads. I wish these people would understand that these roads are vital to us and some people travel up to six hours a day just to work. These times will now be lengthened due to damaged roads.
People need to understand and take into account that if it rains, the roads are closed for a reason – to preserve them – and you need to be prepared to be stuck for about a week if need be. It appears the organisers of the Outback Challenge failed to take this into account and advise everyone.
Your need to get back to the city is obviously more important than hard working country peoples needs to get supplies in to feed their families.

Obviously this person from 4wd mthly forum is ill informed as i believe the organisers of the OBC pay quite a substantial amount to the local councils to help re-patriate the local roads after we leave. This plus insurances and other costs is why entry to the OBC is so high.

Yeah there were heaps of people that pitched in and helped fix the car at Robbies place.
Ill name the ones that i can remember - Robbie, Pete, Jane, Myself (Jacko), Acky, Hollitt, Jamie, one of the thai guys and Simmo played in the water as per the pic.
Im sure ive missed some names but i do know Pete and Jane were extremely greatful for the help.
The car was mobile by about 4:30pm Friday when we left to head back to SA.
Pretty good effort considering we only started after a great BBQ lunch put on by Robbie and his wife.
Just goes to show what a great community the 4wd world is.

Absolutely agree, and all the local Broken Hill people are pretty special too, they always welcome us with open arms and help out unconditionally.
Robbie being a competitor knows only too well what it's like having a damaged truck..........and good on him for being so generous.
I trust Jane & Peter are back in Qld long ago already.....thanks to all who helped them you are the best.

Looks like it was a big job!
Really think the OBC is a special comp where the older guys help out the newer guys and really who ever wins is just a bonus!
Have to get out there and watch it one year! Maybe even compete in a few!
