Bizzare engine problem, lost PS, alt and fan

Post by wrksux »

The car did something odd today and very worrying. the power steering died, pulled over check fluid all good. when i went to turn the steering wheel, all the warning lights came on, water in fuel, oil ect ect. this is in a TD42 when i open the bonnet and had a mate turn the wheel i could see the fan, alt and PS all slowing because the harmonic balancer seemed to be slowing/stoping. however engine revs didn't seem to slow or stall. seemed to keep the revs.

its at my mechanics now has anyone ever heard of this happening or possibly what it is or how much its going to cost me?

Cheers
Tim

either your harmonic balancer is stuffed or you just sheared off the key which holds it or locks it to the crank

Had same happen to my 2.8, cost $5000, done my Nissan dealer, basically you have the choice ou repairing the crank or getting a new one , mine cost me $1300 new, the rest of the cost is other parts and labour.

The warning lamps in the instrument cluster are wired so that if the Alternator stops charging, then as well as the charge lamp coming on, the other lamps will come on as well even if there is no problem in those circuits. Sounds like your Alternator may not?? have been turning at normal speed thus causing all the lamps to come on when you turn the steering..

Harmonic balancer is a sliding fit on the crankshaft with a keyway and cone washer. Nut is done up to around 380nm i think. When you say power steering died, did you loose all assistance or did pump sieze up?
