has any one ever tried to do this? if so how didi it turn out? i thinking of doing this for 4wding. its either auto or 4.8 diff gears. what is every one opinion. thanks for your help.

The GQ I have is a factory diesel auto.
The auto works extremely well with the diesel, more so with it being turbo'd

My previous ride was a GU turbo diesel manual and the GQ drives so much better and some what faster too :cool:

I had a SWB with a TD42T auto with rockhoppers. Awsome, the crawler gears helped with engine braking down hill. The TD42 with the auto had heaps of torque so I idled up most things instead of putting the peddle to the floor and destroying everything.

will a 4.2 petrol aoto bolt straight up to the 4.2 diesel motor and what else is required. how much effect on fuel economy on normal day to day driving

I think I have heard that the bell housing is different.

Auto's generally use more fuel that manuals. How much probably depends on the way you drive.

I've been doing winch comps with a TD42 turboed intercooled etc etc and factory auto. You couldn't pay me enough to use a manual. You have to learn how to drive again as it is very different to how you drive a manual. ie You don't use engine braking, rather you use left foot braking.

The auto means that you always have power on. All you have to do is accelerate the motor once and then you let the trans do the work. No worries about lag etc etc.

Turbo deseils just go a lot better with an auto.
93 Nissan Pathfinder / Terrano Turboed VH45, GQ Trans and T-case, coil overs, hydraulic winch and fair bit of other stuff. (Currently a pile of parts in the workshop)

Are the petrol auto's the same as the diesels?
Besides the bell housing.

Do they run the same ecus, torque converters etc or are they different animals?

different from what I gathered.. I went with a 4.5 GU box on my conversion

I love the factory auto in my 4.2 Diesel (aftermarket Intercooled & Turboed).

But my next mod will probably be DBA slotted rotors, and some brake work, the engine braking isn't great, so you do need to use more brake, and so the better you can get them working the better.

But as for climbing, the auto is awesome!
Some lower ratios and I'd be in heaven.
