Rear diff swap for hilux

Has any one put bigger diffs in a hilux (coil)???
I was thinking some thing like Landcriuser or patrol.

Thanks killalux. I saw the pics n read your story.
By using the short shafts on each side does that make the wheel width the same as standard. How did you go with getting engineered.

Obviously better than the rear DIFF ...whats go the PIPES :?: having issues with the rear ? Rear Centre ?

Pipes... given that you have an 80 series front... why not stick with an 80 series rear... or will the offset stuff your driveline angles? The only bad thing about a patrol rear end IMHO is semi-floating axles... wheel bearings are $180 a pop per side.

The x link is sweet. The only thing is I need 1" longer bump stop or go down to 33 or cut the front of my quater pannels. The front out flexes the rear. :D

Yes I am going to put a 80 in the rear now since Ive busted two diff centres in less than a year. First I busted the spinder gears & this week I took three teeth off the crown. So a bigger diff for me. I was going to coil the rear in two months anyway. Now this just makes my do it properly. So after its all done I'll have 80 front, air lockered(out of the rear), super longfield axles, slotted rotors & harder springs (OME too soft). Then 80 rear, that has disc brakes (slotted rotors),Air lockered disconnect sway bar & coils with poly bags. :cool:

yeah same width as standard lux (non IFS), just got it blue plated as a diff swap.

i got standard housings and prado centres in my diffs (heaps bigger/stronger crownwheel and pinion. i run a air lokka front and lock rite rear...

hope it helps
3.0L turbo diesel, 4" lift, bud's front housing, track assasin cv's, air lokker front + Rear, beadlock'd 37 stickies, high steer, 15.5" travel ranchos, high pinion diff and coils on the rear

Is a Prado diff really stronger than a Hilux? I don't know, that's why I ask, but I thought they were about the same strength.

If that's the case, swapping in a Prado axle might be a nice way to get a bit more strength, extra width and disc brakes.

I thought that a prado ran an 8" cown just like the hilux.

yeh they are a 8" but the 4.88 ratio i put in had a bigger crownwheel/pinion but the centres were reco'd so maybe the gears were swapped with some thing else, they run bigger bearings and a stronger housing.

Not sure exactly how much stronger

V6 Centres have a thicker third member (carrier) that is exactly the same in every other dimension to all other 8" carriers, so maybe the prado ones are similar to handle the increase in power of the V6 and TD motors.
