just cut my jimny into a ute last Monday. It all starts. Can't decide if i should weld the rear door and surround on or leave it open - making the cage easier etc. the rear section must weigh nearly 50kg's inc door. so effectively having a rear will add 45 kgs + another rear hoop etc for ccda specs. Guess i will then need a mesh cargo barrier etc

Is an open back a real pita or is a vinyl cover all you need. Just don't want to regret it at 4:30am in broken hill!

Personal oppinion but I'd close the rear. More protection from the elements and easier to secure any gear inside. little bit of weight on the back wont make stuff all difference to the performance in the end.

What's easier to break into. Steel or Vinyl?

i'm pretty sure a cargo barrier will be thieve resistant. Its a race truck, but just want to know if its ok to be open. never owned an open car.

justin, i personally would go a full steel back. vinyl will flap around and most probably not seal 100%. and dust is a big contributing factor aswell.

very keen to see this buildup. loved the chevy smurf one.

Someone over here in NZ has converted a few jimnys into utes (or "flat-decks" for the pedantic)

Even though I'm not a huge Jimny fan- they're very cool! Factory look too! Would look tops with 35's etc... as planned in this build ;)

thanks all. I might strip all the panels to one layer thick, weld the door seam, that way it will weigh stuff all.

the cage is my only drama as its an integral trophy truck style. a couple of cv boots might just work with those weld on cage joiners.
