found something interesting (lsd's)

60 series lsd and 80 series lsd are both the same hemisphere's. To fit an 80's into a 60's housing you need to have the bearing journells machined down to suit the 60's carrier bearings ( we all knew that I know). BUT !!!
Upon pulling the two centres apart to re-shim and tighten the spring I found the 60 series one had a lot thicker guage spring in it and I mean a lot. The 80 series spring was the same physical size and length but a lot thinner guage spring. When I rang toyota they gave me the same part numbers. anyone else noticed this before??

i hope u didnt go to all the bother of machining the housing, when an 80 bearing is all you need....it was only a dimension change from imperial to metric, and double the price bearings....id say the spring has been swapped earlier for a thicker aftermarket one....spacing it also does wonders, but the more you tension it, the faster it will wear...and it will never lock on ya...

I cross referenced the bearings and they said I couldn't use the 80 series bearing in a 60 series housing. The outer cone diameter is .02mm larger in the 80 bearing. It only cost me $30 to get the machining done and the bearings were only $25 each so not to bad. I don't expect the LSD to lock, I just want it to take a bit more preasure before it slips.

I've been using 80's and HZJ75 hemisphere's in 40's 55's 60's 75's diff's to turn them into lsd's for years using the 50mm bearings without any problems.

Or you can get the complete 80 rear and bolt it right into the 40 housing, no biggy

Thats right, but both std 60 lsd and 80 lsd bearings have thesame od dimension and thickness...only the inner diameter was changed between the models. There is a good side to what you have done...the earlier bearings are off the shelf and $20 opposed to the 80 series specific size bearings at $100 a set

Yep. I back this. I have an 80 series locker with 80 series bearings in a 60 series housing.

Yup, i fitted the 60 series ARB locker into the rear of the 80 for the cost of the bearings, same OD, different ID.
