Welded diff
I was thinking about getting my front diff welded up.
Has anyone done this, and how bad is the steering with the hubs locked in offroad?
I have powersteering so that should help. Its will in a FJ73 with the old 3F

Knowen of one or 2 and it'd just be like a airlocker on all the time so yeah it won't want to turn even with the power steering and did hear one of them saying that at the bottom of the hill passanger would have to jump out and throw a hub in and at the top take it out but in doing that it'd put alot of force on the other cv which is locked when general 4wding. so auto/air/pro lock it if you want a form of locker up front
plenty of parts on the bench
i wouldn't do it, imagine goin down a slippery hill and have to turn halfway down. it just wouldn't happen.
also would strss cv's etc alot.

I definitely wouldn't do it, having an autolocker in the front is bad enough IMO.
Maybe keep an eye out for a cheap second hand airlocker.
Or weld the back first - Bundys never have the front wheels on the ground anyway do they?
Edit: not a bundy huh?

whats the point of rebuiliding a diff then ruining by welding it up. If your current front diff works alright just weld it up. If your hate it, get a new centre then rebuild. It'll probs break something eventually anywaysbravo wrote:yeah but i can rebuild the diff and get it welded for $350
where as a lockrite is 500 plus the rebuild
cheers
yer i am pretty keen to see how it goes, if it fucks out a second hand diff will be cheap anyway. The only thing i can see that could break is CV's if the front wheels bounces to much. The guy who is gonna do it had a hilux with a 308 in it with his welded and didnt break anything. After all its just gonna be like having an airlocker turned on all the time

firstly did the hilux even get started if i even thought about a V8 with stock cv's they'd break with the thought of it As they are piss weak cv's. after all when it won't turn you can disengage a airlocker but hey weld it then we can see your wanted ad for cheap auto or airlockerbravo wrote:The guy who is gonna do it had a hilux with a 308 in it with his welded and didnt break anything. After all its just gonna be like having an airlocker turned on all the time

done it. woks awsome. carry a spare CV bell or 2 and a hub aswell. works awsome, just unlock a hub if it is too hard. when you CAN afford a locker (if ever) then they replace the whole hemisphere anyway. steering is just like having the steering stops wound right out. not much turn lock to lock just 3 point everything if need be.
done it and didnt mind it.

turbos are nice but i'd rather be blown
bravo wrote:i am gonna put a lockrite in now, may be welding the rear though
i wouldnt recommend it!
youd have a better affect putting a lockrite in tha arse end. leave the front open if ya gonna lockrite it or weld it. youll only blow cvs and crash your bus.
lsd or airlocker is the go but if cost is an issue.. lsd or possibly CIG. i dont recommend cig cause its farkn harsh on everything.
