Fuel Gauge working in reverse?!?!
Picked up a 91 suzi a couple of weeks back and found the fuel gauge needle pointing about 1cm below the "E". I just assumed that the guage was broken. But its actually working in reverse. As it gets to around half a tank it starts coming up and is at the quarter tank mark on the gauge by the time its done 250km. It then continues up as it empties out.
Has this happened to anyone else? Theres some shorts in the steering column wiring (left indicator sometimes turns on the wiper jets and wipers). Could it just be that the wires are reversed?

Have you got five reverse gears and one forward gear- 'R' is for rev hard... tehehe
Haven't heard of the fuel gauge doin' that before- mind you, my air compressor was wired into my headlight loom- lights on, lockers off, lights off, lockers on... negative switching at its best

mine plays up a little.... fill it up and it goes past E and basically sits at the bottom of the movement range, around the half tank mark, it decides to rise probably at the most to 1/4 tank, from there, if it hits the bottom of the guage again.. best bet is to call someone coz there is only abot half a litre in there!
Have a 'new'(second hand) tank that is dentless so am hoping this might solve the problem, but till i get motivated and get the time to install... $25 fuel, 200km.... and a jerry can!

Ahh! interesting!! how much does the long ranger hold? any clearance issues compared to a standard tank? Mine has died terminally now.
wire and gauge is ok as tested ground it to earth and went up fine.
any ideas? i am thinking either a sender issue (farked) or earth issue on tank.
either way is looking like dropping the tank out.

I agree with Squik. (fuel float)
I thought this was a standard Zook 'feature'. Seen it on more than a few, got used to setting the trip meter when ever I filled up.

'89 SWB Soft Top, 6.5:1 Calmini gears, rear Lockright, 31s, pwr steering. 1.3 16vmpfi 1300 going in
When I bought my Sierra, the owner said to me, price it negotiable, because of: bla, bla,bla, and the fuel gauge doesn't work. New sender cost $80, an hours work (at night), and all was good after that.
I have noted that the gauge doesn't move at a consistant rate though. Slow down to 3/4, rushes down to a 1/2 (half full actually reads about 3/8), then it plods on after that.

Wheeling on completely wicked angles, without even looking stable.
Yeah Squik is right... float may have leak and therefor filling with fuel, or if theres been water in the tank can cause corrosion to jam float...
LongRanger is good for about 70L, they still make em if you ask nice and i'm reliably informed (by the guy who makes and fits em at the factory) that they will fit a LWB as well.
To recalibrate, remove sender unit, hook electrics back up (will need to run an earth), measure tank depth from sender entry to nominal empty (leave a bit of extra as a safety margin in the bottom) and then adjust float stoppers so gauge reads over that range. If it doesn't read nicely for full range, make it more accurate near empty... that's the important end.
This is all second hand btw, i haven't had time to pull mine out yet and play with it, but description was same from both Out of Town tech and mate who recently played with his due to gauge issues.
