1HD-T to 1HD-FT?

Post by mud4b »

ok so i have my 92 80 sahara (body/chassis/diffs/loom/fridge) but i need to buy another 80 for the donor parts (engine/box/links/tanks/interior)...

does anyone know if i can swap in the 1hdft (twincam turbo diesel?) in place of the 1hdt... will the looms be different since its basically the same engine to a point? and if so does anyone know what difference there is in the looms?

this is providing i can find one too... what model did these come out in?

cheers mark..

looms completely different

1hdfet is only in 100 series, and you need the loom all the way into the dash.

1HDT is the origonal, 1HDFT is multivalve found in later 80 series

1HDFTE is electronic injected found in 100 series

The biggest problem I've found with Toyota looms is that they change the plugs every few years , the colour coding on the wires generally stays the same though. It might be easier to get a 1HDT-FT engine loom from the wreckers and swap the joiner plug to fit your body loom.

This is a certified genuine reply ;)

The glow systems are diffent, so the glow control relay is proberly different, Alternator plugs went from a round plug to a oval shape, you can get the differnt plug non gen as its a common repair.
I would swap them over, wont be too hard to wire up :)

the hdft has no glow plugs...even easier to wire up :) same block, bigger turbo/multivalve/hard to find cheap, hdt is not such a bad motor...

1HD-FT engine came out in the 1995 - 1998 HDJ80's.

Direct bolt in swap, minor wiring changes, particularly to glow screen and SICS vac solenoids - both easily overcome.

And it's not a twin cam! Single cam with bridged actuators to operate 24 valves.

Not sure what sort of benefit you expect over the 1HD-T for the $ it will cost?

glow screen and SICS vac solenoids ? is that a huge restrictor in the inlet/x over pipe?

yup i did realise it was not a twincam..i stuffed up..

the dollars is not really meaningful. i have to find a donor 80 anyway so i thought i would look for one of these and not just a 1hdt.. it all depends on what i can find..

cheers for the info

Glow screen is the intake preheater, more for emmissions reduction than starting, just forget to wire it up ;-)

SICS is start injection control system, a vac actuator on the injection pump that reduces the cold start black smoke puff, also controlled by the glow controller and vac switching valve - this can also be forgotten about if required.

I dropped a 1HD-FT into my 70 series, no big problems with wiring.
I used my original wiring loom and didnt wire up the glow screen and SICS. I used a couple of the senders out of the original motor so that I didnt have to change plug ends. pretty simple stuff.

I'd do it if you can find a 1HD-FT, they do come up, you've just got to be patient.

You've got to lean as far forward as possible

Its actually not that bad, I was up in the high country on the long weekend and did some pretty steep tracks (Mt Terrible-MtSkene-Howitt High Plains-Wonnangatta-Talbotville-Dargo High Plains-Hotham) and it never felt like coming up at the front.
The extra power is great for long steep hills, did most of it easily in 2wd.

PS: Sorry for the hijack... :)
