2 inch on roll bars

just curious as to why 90% of people use 2 inch steel on their roll bars when building custom trays? i was wanting to go 3 on mine. is there any real reason people dont or just cauz its easier to work with 2?

i might be wrong but id say because 2inch is prob enough to make it strong and using 3 inch would only make your vehicle even heavier! so to keep the weight down i spose!

44.5 is the standard, cheap, easy to work with, standard die size for other stuff like roll cages

for trays standard pipe 2.6mm side walls would be fine, wouldnt worry about gal, harder to weld plus will rust at the welds anyway, if you want gal get it dipped after you build it

if you want to run 3" te cheapest and easiest way to build is with weld in bends provided you can get the angles you want with them, most steel supply places have a range of bends for a reasonable price

yeah i was just thinking bout hiring a hydraullic pipe bender for a day... ive read on other posts that guys use 3.2mm wall thickness.. is this just overkill? it will be structual cauz if i roll it will be whats protecting me.

basic cams specs is CDW 2.6 wall, if you are using pipe go the heavier stuff

3" tube is actually weaker for the same length/kg than 2" - it is less resistant to imapct damage too due to the larger radius.

That's why 1.5, 1.75 and 2" are all that gets used, even on the heaviest cages like top fuel and race trucks.

Personally, I would leave 3" for ladder racks.
