hey guys, im new to the forum and new to my patrol ute.
Last week i bought a 1997 TD42 patrol ute with what is said to be a 4" lift. its on 315/75R16 cooper S/T tyres.
driving, it is nothing compared to my old corolla with a supra motor, but i felt it went alright for a diesel in a big truck. however, i was expecting decent economy.
i filled up, got 70 litres in the tank, and after 350 km's its now around 1/4 remaining. which is really quite bad in my opinion for what has essentially been mainly highway driving....
i find the ute losses alot of pace up hills and really struggles to maintain speed, even when you drop it back a cog and really found this quite unexpected being a big diesel.

so i thought i would start with checking for any obstructions to airflow and im gonna check the fuel filters etc to ensure everything there is good.

so i think that informs more or less with whats going on.

so as i said, i went looking for air restrictions etc, and came across this puppy...

thats the bit that goes just inside of the gaurd and connects to the snorkel.
To me, that is a massive air restriction and goes against everything i know, albeit, not alot with diesels, but alot on petrol engines and gas conversions having done alot of work on my old corolla. but anywho, just wondering if anyone has encountered this before and if it has a real purpose?
the centre flat of steel is the size of the pipework entering for the snorkel. so the air has to diffuse around that to get into the motor.


i am wondering, what would be the effect of removing that plate, im thinking of either putting a hole saw just smaller than the centre (i conveniantly have a 76mm hole saw) or just cut the whole thing out to make life simple.

what do people think and does anyone have any experience in this?

Get rid of that whole thing and put a pipe from your air box to the guard. Also replace your standard air filter with a k&n filter if not aready done. $100 but washable

ta, i was just wondering that.

none of the snorkel connections seem to be particularly water tight so i may have to look into sorting all of it.

i may pull that off and see what difference it makes before anything.

i checked the filter, looked new, didnt check brand though. will do when i get a chance.

any theories on poor economy, and the reason i have to keep the throttle a decent way open to keep it moving at 100kph?

Naturally aspirated td42, 315s and crap fuel economy go hand in hand.
The drum thing is Nissans version of a cyclonic pre-cleaner.
Either put smaller tyres on it or turbo it.

Mate,

The 4.2 diesel comes alive with a snorkel, a low boost turbo and a decent air box like a Donaldson.

Mine pulls an average of 13/100 km on a camping trip with a lot of gear on board, and 420,000 on the clock.
