GQ Steering Heavy as and doesn't seem to return to centre..

Post by Mulisha »

hi

Pretty much when i come out of a corner i gota re correct the steering wheel doesn't automatically go straight like i want. I had the car like 2 years and always has done it and wouldn't mind finding the problem.. Also has the 19 year old steering dampener was thinking of the RTC one with the spring for it.

Cheers

id say a new dampener, i think your old one sounds like its had enough.

i used to have a RTC one, and it failed after about 1 year, now just got a normal dampener on now and it works great, its a ridepro one.

Your caster angles are (most likley) buggered. RTC is one of the functions of caster.

Positive caster tends to straighten the wheel when the vehicle is traveling forward, and thus is used to enhance straight-line stability.

Dampner want necessarily fix the problem. Sounds like its more of a caster problem than the dampner.
To check just take it off. And see what happens.

If you take the dampner off and its still tight, check the swivel bearings..they could be binding.... just a thought.

Did this happen suddenly??

I diched my sprung damper as it made the steering heavy when offroad and in competition, personally I like the drop boxes more than caster bushes or plates as they restore the angle of the radius arm to horizontal freeing up the rear pivot bush. It's hard to explain but also when you hit a bump it means the diff isn't moving forward and up like with front leaf shackles, ideally the diff moves up and back when you hit a bump which is what happens at std road height and with drop boxes but not caster bushes.
They look low but you'l never hang up on them, especially in a shortie.
