Bottom end troubles- 80series Cruiser
Hey My cousins had some trouble with his 80series.
He started noticing a ticking sound goin with the revs speed.
Took the car into to Sean @ South East Qld 4x4 last Thursday.
On friday we were told that the fault was the Crankshaft. Apparently the bearins down there should be replaced every 100000Km.
So my cousin needs to change the bearings and machine the crank?
Sean told him it would cost alot of money so we gonna do as much work our selves.
He only wants to get it fixed so he can sell the junk and buy either a Range Rover or a Zook .
So what do you guys recomend we do? Sorce a bottom end rebuild kit do it all ourselves? Strip everything off the motor and take only it to a repairer(to save on labour cost)?
OR Buy a whole engine to replace it ?
Just got off the phone with Gary and he thinks the rod of one of the pistons may be slightly bent aswell cousins not gonna be happy.

If it is an early 80 with the 1hdt motor, there was a recall on these bigend brgs. Check out www.lcool.org and ask away-site was formed with this problem.
Usually, you wont need the crank done, just a set of bearings, costs 4-500 bucks for some other mechanic to do, or complain, complain complain to Toyota.

80 series Big ends
Hi there, I've just had my 91 Turbo diesel Cruiser done, it cost me $600 at the Toyota place in Mandurah. Big-end bearings replaced, oil and filter change. Its running beaut now, ticking noise gone. I wouldn't leave it too before changing them....Al
its only a three banana job to do yourself (change big end bearings) but to drop the crank and/or change the main bearings requires the engine removed from the vehicle and completely disassembled.
the only special tools you need to do the big end bearings are a torque wrench and a 12 point 12mm socket. you also have to love oil in your hair, no matter how long you let the engine drain it keeps dripping while you're under there.

Forget Toyota, they don't want anything to do with it now, maybe 6 years ago !
The idea is to replace the bearings every 100,000km before you notice any problems for insurance, once you get to your mates stage ya up for a full bottom end rebuild = big $$$.
Surely some one told him about this problem before it happened, most do, just they hope they get away without doing anything.

My father owned the car b4 him from new and nun of us ever herd of the fault, the only reason we found it out is cause of my askin about how much it would cost to fix.
Shit aye well we already contacted Toyota see what happens, they probably tell us to Go Get FARKED ! ! !
But yeah My father owned a service station and all for over 8 year and the car was serviced regularly just never knew anything about it.
So he is up for a full bottom end rebuild HE IS GONNA BE PISSED
FARKEN TOYOTA peices of shit................. Definately Glad i bought a Range Rover

Mate I havnt had neither of the above.............
The toyo has some farked up brakes, strip the front C&P, now the bearing problem.................. owww and lets not start on my uncles GU bending the driveshaft & C&P.
And another thing there so fricken slow
I dont know these people sayin RRs are so unreliable.......... and apparently chew fuel.......... I get the same fuel economy as my mothers 4.5L Petrol Cruiser.
Id go a Zook or Range Rover anyday. Exspecially at my low budget.
I do like the old 40series cruisers though, just seems the newer the 4by the worse it is.

Obviously payes to check,
A mate has a 80 series & decided to change the bearings just to be on the safe side & while he was saving up for a week or two to drop it in to get done the bearings let go causing thousands.
Two weeks to late, not happy !!!

Just thought I would up date you on my cousins crusier troubles.
1. Still no response from toyota..................
2. Got a set of bearings and oils etc from Global. changed all bearings (No4 was stuffed) WORKS LIKE NEW
So much for the thousands of dollars that the mechanic wanted, he he I checked the crank and all were perfect except the number 4 it was slightly scratchy but not too bad and nuthing wleded or stuck to it, So i went for the easy change bearings option and seems to be fine.
who said I was dodgy

BAD IDEA !
Crankshafts & bearings are more delicate than you think.
I 100% guarentee that the new bearing will flog out again very soon, trust me !
You must re-grind & linish the crank for it to last.
