Towing Motor

Post by PSI-EFI »

hey all, we own a 80 series 4.5 litre 4wd auto and we do allot of towing, our boat weighs 3+ tonnes and we find that the cruiser just struggles too much. We want to convert our car and put a v8 inside but were having trouble deciding whats the best v8, We need a motor with lots of torque that will pull our boat in far travel without too much of an issue and we also need info on the gearbox, diff, transfercase adapters, etc.... and we also want to run it on straight gas. at first we were gonna buy a 502CI but that was too much money, then we were gonna get a 427CI, and then we were told to go a 400CI, so were kinda lost, any help would be awesome. :)

I thought ( and I'm a Toyota purist and lover ) your best bet it could a big V8 like a Chevy or Cummings ..

Fit a 6BT and you will be done for lots of towing .. and really heavy if you want ..

Could boost it over a 22 PSI and make a really tough towing car ..

thnx for the comment, we called Marks 4wd today and he rocomended that we fit a 454 BB with gen6 block. the motor has 390 hp and 595 ft/pounds torque. With the adapter it is going to bolt stright onto the old bell housing, and we also called desert cool radiators and we will run a custom made 2 core 26mm radiator with twin 16" thermo fans. :)

#shakes head#

a nice supercharger or low boost turbo on straight gas would put you pretty close to the BB and be easier, less of a head f#ck, and probably more reliable (there's a 1fzfe here in adelaide that runs 25psi on stock internals and only had issues with the head studs stretching. ARP fixed that for him)

sorry about my ignorance, but how would i achieve torque with the same engine, i was under the impression that a supercharger would increase the hp and not the torque which is what were mainly after

power is actually a load of shit... torque is what makes power. to get the power of a car from a dyno it actually calculates some equation which give power.
turbos are nice but i'd rather be blown

ummm ok...

considering HP is simply torque multiplied by revs, the most effective way to up the HP is to increase the torque...

a well ballanced, well designed forced induction 6 will give you heaps of low down torque. as they are long stroke
