Belt driven compressor

Post by GU_247 »

Well finally I have mounted my belt driven compressor up to the Patrol
The engine is a VS 5.0L
After much research I have been very successfull

The compressor is a SD5H14 (R134a equivalent of a SD508).
The bracket mounts off the cylinder head and is gusseted for strength
The only thing I still need to do is support the compressor from one of the front lugs.
I am using a reservior of approx 9 litres
The compressor is driven via the water pump pulley (leter model VS use a double 11A pulley)
The belt length is the same as the water pump/altenator belt (which now gives me a spare
Currently I am using an ARB pressure switch (100psi off / 70psi on)
But Im thinking of changing this to an adjustable pressure switch so that I can reduce the differential to say 100/85. The main reason I want to do this that when I use an impact wrench it only drops around 15psi each time I undo a wheel nut. Im guessing if I reduce the differential the tank can recover each time and I can start off with 100psi every time.
What do others out there run for a pressure switch?
I am also looking at running air lockers at a later stage and have accomodated for this. What experience have others had with running air lockers off this type of compressor?

i run a 110/150 pressure switch combined with a big 12v compressor and 35L tank. i wish i ran something like a 130/150 as the recovery time is a bit long. but i love havin 150psi on tap.

i have lockers and use a regulator to keep approx 85psi to them constantly....too much and you wil blow seals. i wouldnt bother with an adjustable pressure switch, just put regulators where u want them. i also have an air horn on a reg.

would love to have one of those belt driven ones, did you buy it or convert it yourself? whats involved?

cheers

I converted it myself
You need to tap the oil plug hole 1/8"BSPT to take a grease nipple
Then remove the back plate of the compressor and drill & tap the return line back to the swash plate chamber and then loctite a plug in ( I used M6)
When tapping you need to be careful to not get swarf from the tap inside the compressor
Pump grease into the compressor. I also pumped a bit more in once it was rotating
