front rear Diff swap

Can you put the front diff in the rear and the rear in the front. I cant see why not they are bsically the same diff I have rung the diff mechanics and get a different answer every time. I want to put the LSDin the front and a locker in the back.

Better get the spanners out then. Can you adjust the clutches on the LSD up so they are a little tighter

I am not sure about that one. I think they have to be rebuilt, but I could be wrong. The cruiser lsd hasnt got a very good reputation as a good slippery, not for 4wding anyway. They are not like the GQ ones, which seem to work quite well.

Yep fair enough. Every little bit helps. And you are right, it should last a lot longer in the front.

You won't need new clutches!! get a couple of shims .35mm and get your centre spring stretched 5mm. I have lsd's front and rear and despite what others say they work well. Or at least they do what they were designed to do.

Mmmm sounds like the go how heavy is the steering when in 4wd and how heavy just when the hubs are in??

80, 70, 60, 40 are all the same in the rear.
70, 60, 40 are the same in the front and rear.
80 and 100 have the 8" front. Hilux centres fit into 80 and 100 front.

I would not recomend it because when u swap front to rear or visa versa u will be running the crown and pinoin on the backside, in wich they have not been lapped to run in this direction.
Thats why if you get both your centres recond they are marked front and rear. The backlash adjustments could be differant aswell.
U might get away with it but they might be noisey.

70, 60, 40 are the same in the front and rear.
80 and 100 have the 8" front. Hilux centres fit into 80 and 100 front.

Concern about Toyota variations around the world .. my advice.

Post 90 70 series come with front axles 8" HP reverse cut .. so aren't the same as rear axle.

As same as all 80 series and 105 series ( that share 80 series plataform )

The 8" Hi Lux are the same up to 97 here ( both solid axles ) front and rear .. ( care R&P diferences ) and share rear until the new vigo.

The 8" rear from hi lux have anormal cut and low pinion .. and don't fit in 8" front High pinion reverse cut ..
