Maxi locker? Any locker?

The time has come to at least entertain the idea of a locker for the 130....just one for now, methinks.
I've got maxi axles, is a maxi locker the only option? Are there any good S/H ones getting around? What do the go for?
$2000 odd for an ARB is out of the Q, sadly :cry: , and I have to be honest, when the salesman asked how many spline they were and are the ARB's compatible with maxi axles....I had no idea :oops:
What are my options?
Where's best to look? (AULRO never seems to have any popping up)
What $ will I need to find for a decent one?

Gee, theyve gone up. i paid 1000 cash from arb for my salisbury locker in 2001 (not fitted). Just ring maxidrive and tell them what you already have, you'd have buckleys of finding a second hand salisbury maxidrive.

...dare I even suggest it.....you could ring Jac Mac in Melbourne, but be prepared to be pilorised for daring to make an enquiry and having the audacity to want to purchase one from there:) Very good product but......ARB look like a rip-off nowadays

Don't the detroits give you a few 'moments' on the highway if you lose a bit of traction or blow a tyre? We get a bit of ice on the road around here.
I have a memory of dad driving something back on the farm with a detroit locker, getting one wheel on the gravel and sharting my pants :oops:

I'd consider anything that came up. i just haven't seen much come up :cry: :cry:

Well it all depends Im in the same boat now wanting lockers very soon and this is the info I came up with Im after a front and rear for the D2

the problem is this unless you know how to put them in your self or you know some one that can do it for you the Ja macs are no good IMO I called him up last week to get a price and to see if he had any aurthrised fitters in NSW he qouted $1300 then advised do your self and hung up :?:

ARB will set you back no more then $1500 each fitted plus the compressor
there big talk about faulty O ring in ARB but this is ARB where talking about and the money they put behind there product im sure that issue has been resolved if there where one

Maxi drives will set you back about $1800 for the rear then about $1300 for fitting which is crazy you dont wont to know how much the fronts are worth the other thing to consider from what ive been told that the vaume for the maxi drives flogs vacume from the brake lines true or not dont know but sounds bad


Im going for ARB with Maxi Drive axles its costing me $3000 lockers $500 for the compressor $1400 for the half shafts and $500 for bearing approx

$5400 front and rear appose to $8000 for Maxi Drives

What he means is the Maxi-drives and JMs includes halfshafts and drive flanges. The ARBs do not and they are REQUIRED.

It should not be $1300 for an MD fitting. MD charged me $400 for fitting.

Vacuum is usually taken from the brake vacuum servo unit. A one way valve is installed, so that in the event that the vacuum line is ripped off an actuator, brakes should not be effected. Is usually a very good setup and nothing goes wrong.

...However, if a vacuum line is ripped off, and your in a puddle of water, she'll suck a bit up. Dirt/mud gets into valve and dries nicely with the valve in an open position, your not to know, you fix vacuum lines, you think everything is fine and dandy. Days/weeks/months pass. Go for a decent drive, rip off another line, and because valve is still open, have little in the way of brakes. Happens. (from personal experience)

Jac Mac supplies a valve and a water trap device with his vacuum line.

Are you sure $400 I called Grahme Cooper he advised $1300 for install

I dont think JM provides half shafts not $1300 bucks any way

Not so, the one way valve is directional to the motor, being vacuum it is sucking in from the diff actuator towards the motor, if you loose a line, it'll keep on sucking, the one way valve is fitted to maintain some vacuum in the tank, so you can operate when the engine is off

But it wont effect your brakes, in theory it would at initial startup, but all you've done is increase the area that need to be brought under vacuum, once done, it'll maintain it, as the diff lock dont really consume vacuum, they just shift/displace it

this has been done to death on here they all end up costing about the same FOR THE SAME SET UP, ie locker axles drive flanges and cv's mostly the fitting cost that changes

re vacume, one could say thay using compressed air will introduce condensation into the line.

there would be more maxi drive lockers in rovers than arbs, many have been used ALOT, in comps etc they are proven.

arbs are good and have been proven

jac mac are good and have been proven

but if people are going to jump up and down about money and make statements, present ALL the facts

When I called MD they advised they dont do a CV upgrade now this may only relate to D2's and not fenders


The price qouted from Grahme Coopers did include the whole kit so credit there but where talking $3200 for the front kit not installed


ARB advised that if I buy the shaft they will slot them in at no extra charge as the shafts where comming out any way and yes $3000 was the installed price im adding $500 for new bearing while its opened up as my truck has done just over 100,000km and the shafts are $1300 unfortunitly been advised there out of stock and will have to wait about 4 weeks for the shafts so ill do them my self


Your exactly right they are all the same both MD and ARB have been proven in comps and the bottom figure is the end price IMO why pay more to get the same result

I do beleave that the standard shaft on a D2 any way are strong enough if you dont go rock bashing how ever the heavier you are on the right foot the easier thing will let go

Most definitely. This was installed by Maxi-drive directly. There was also a club discount on top of that and he bought my old diff and shafts, which took even more off the price.......

And....in addition...as he did not take Visa at the time and I did not have a cheque book, he let me pay him later......... Mal is a great guy.

Mr. Cooper is screwing you.... $1300 to fit a diff and shafts is robbery.

its almost worth driving down from NSW to get it done

As another option to consider if you are looking to upgrade CV's and axles with the locker, I can supply you the Longfield CV's and Axles we run in our competition Rangie, they will match up to a standard ARB locker. We couldn't break them at the Ateco which is a pretty good sign of their strength.

Ummmmm, M-D was not doing an exchange. They built the diff into the existing housing. It should not take more than 4 hours assuming you are a competent mechanic.

Im not sure if I get the half shaft from MD ARB will fit them for free seeing that all of it is going to be opened any way

however I'm running out of funds pritty quick and need to approach the minister of finance and war

at the same time im doing a 4 inch lift Ive bought every thing from springs to cranked watts linkages however still need shocks so funds are getting tight


its either bite the bullet or do them later and be very gental

Don't believe it, you have to run lines, set up the switch and tank, change crown wheel and pinion, press carrier bearings on, set backlash remove housing, pre stress, cut big hole, wled plate on, paint, put back in, assemble third in housing with dog and axles, tailshaft...................
