my Mk is better than my GQ :(

Post by Snarba »

Hmmmm after waiting years and drooling over GQ's I've finally been able to afford one ( 90 model LWB Diesel) but I must say my old Turbo SD33 with a 2.5 inch exhaust pisses all over it....I'm very sad  The GQ is heaps more comfortable and looks better but is an absolute slug on the road, turns like a f'n barge and uses more fuel. I'm half tempted to sell it and try the 3.0litre Turbo instead....whats the point of having a more reliable motor if it's a pain in the arse to drive? I don't know what to do anymore......obviously a turbo would make all the diff but at $ 4000 ish I'll be saving another couple of years and I could afford a whole SD33T MK for that price :x I know I'm just having a whinge but I've been after one of these for about 5 years......poo

whinge whinge f&kn whinge :finger:

Have you serviced it fully ? Got the fuel pump cleaned out and slightly tweaked ? cleaned the fuel tank out ?

I remember mine being a slug but not as bad as your making out  .

if you have some mechanical skill's you can do the turbo ALOT cheaper than the said 4k.... have a good search around here lots of info, there's often kit's going for 1-2k from bloke's parting out their rig's.

Mate, I just drove 2500k's in 3 days in my 4.2 gq. Cant say it needed more power... (just softer springs)

Remember it is a truck, with a truck motor, and drive accordingly.

I agree that it could be the pump. When I had my mk ute with a na sd 33, I had some pump work done. Performance after was like night and day. I couldnt believe it afterwards!

his comparison vehicle is an MQ, i rekon he knows all about driving a truck with a truck motor....

Its your motor!

I must say i did test drive a naturally aspirated diesel Gq when i was looking at them & it went quite well

But if all else fails, sell the Mq & put the money towards a turbo kit for the gq

My swb t/d mk dragged of my cousins gq with n/a with only 180k on it and i was towing a heavy car trailer with a box trailer on it. He was empty.

and that was before 4.6 gears and a 3inch exhaust and heaps of psi.

Glad to hear that the old sd33 still kick ass

I have never driven the sd33t, but I know the hp and torque figures are similar to the TD42, with the gq having a bit more. I suspect though that the sd33t in an swb could have a power to weight advantage over the gq, not to mention lower ratio diffs

Yea there are a few thing i prefer about the mk to the gq - (mk Swb na sd33 & Gq Lwb na td42) on road i prefer the gq everywhere (except turning circle but not fair to compare a lwb and swb) off road the mk has a better crawl ratio, no drivetrain backlash down at low revs 500 - 1000 (mk has 300000k and gq has 140000k) and i hate the way you have to push the gq transfer lever down to get to n and 4L - finicky i know but the mk just pulls back smooth as silk.
Performance, isn't a huge difference the gq goes a bit better, the mk with a turbo would top it.
Once i get a turbo for the gq and maybe some crawler gears i'm sure i'll be well and truly over mk's
There are no stupid questions, but there are a LOT of inquisitive idiots

I have not had a chance to take the gq off road yet, but I will admit that my old mk ute had a awesome crawl ratio for a stock 4by. it was about 45 to one. Sometimes had to give a little gas going down some hills. I guess a 4.875 to one axle ratio helped a lot plus plus the mks had a lower range transfer case than the gqs
