Have you always had this problem, or has it started recently?

My guess is your antenna has an impedance problem. When receiving, at low power levels, it's not noticeable. When you're transmitting, you're not getting enough power to the antenna itself, because most of it is being reflected back to the transmitter. Not only does this severely limit your range, but it can damage your transmitter, too.

If you can, check all your antenna wiring for signs of damage. If you don't find anything obvious, I recommend finding a radio specialist who can do some tests for you.

Good luck,

Scott

I'd say the PA has gone, which is a common problem when transmitting into a bad antenna or none at all.
take the radio to your radio repair place and they'll sort it out

Same thing happened to mine, the antenna cable melted over time by being too close to the exhaust.
