buying a 94 Jack Montie

Post by dogart »

first posting for me on what looks like a pretty good forum for
anything and everything 4WD.

About to purchase a '94 Monterey petrol auto with 150000km on the clock.
Getting it from a wholesale yard, where they don't do 'F' all about
cleaning/servicing basically buying it as it was traded to a ford dealership.

Have taken it for a cruise for about an hour and all seems fine apart from
some serious vibration/shudder in front rhs between 100km/h & 140km/h.
Interior is imac' and the huge sunroof goes off big time!

I've noticed it blowing some white smoke when the dealer first started it
up for me to take it for a run.
Any comments on this! I just presume it needs a good tune & service or
is it an indication of something else.

Is there anything I should be looking for in particular before buying it.

Coming from and ole 84 LS Jack so this will be bloody luxury for us if we get it!

Any recomendations for a good mechanic for jackaroos in Perth too?

any comments replies and suggestions would be appreciated.

cheers

Walked into Maddington Auto Wholesale in Perth today ready to part
with $18000 of my hard earned cash on the 94 Jackaroo Monterey
and it's not there! Damn it's sold allready, so I thought.
Walked into the office and asked "where's the monty"?
Oh it's in Busselton (~300km from the yard!).
Whats it doing there I asked.
Oh...we let the mechanic take the family for a holiday for 5 days.
A well known spot for 4WDing and fishing on the beach!
And would prob add 1000km when they have finished there little adventure.

Said to the missus, lets go, not taking any of this shit, it's a bad omen
and wasn't meant to be! The owner started with the BS...oh we didn't hear
back from you, thought you weren't interested. The mechanic would look after it
BS BS BS BS!!!!!

F'ING SPEWIN'!

Seriously...would anyone still buy the car after knowing that? I wouldn't.

And that was Maddington Auto Wholesale if your every in the market for a
REALLY USED CAR.

STILL SPEWIN'

I'd still think about buying it if I were you.

It is pretty rude for that to happen but you could just use it as a bit of ammunition to get more off the asking price. Im sure that it wouldnt be in the mechanics best interest to thrash or damage the thing as he would be the one who has to fix it.

Still sounds like a good deal as long as mechanically ok as 150,000 km is bugger all for that age and think of those luxuries!
You already own a Jackaroo so you obviously rate them pretty high to be looking at another one. Ive had my 92 model for 4 years and am thoroughly happy with it with no major problems in that time. And thats with the punishment that I deal to it offroad which is something that 9 out of 10 Jackaroos dont see. The 3.2V6 is a strong unit and very reliable. Maybe to satisfy your doubts you should get it checked out by SGIO or RAC. Few $$$ extra spent could be well worth it.

Cheers,

Noel

PS: I thought the other Wolf is in Perth also. :?

Noel,

I'm starting to calm down and may go back tomorrow to
see what sort of deal I can wangle...if any.
Still at $18K with 150K km is still a good price.

It's just the fact of the unknown about how, what and where
the mechanic has been and done that concerns me.

As you would know, from busso you can go and do just about any style
of 4wding. Good spot to experiment down south!

It is a nice rig and the sunroof has sold it for us, not that we should be buying a car because of it. ABS, power everything etc etc.

will let ya know what happens

Well the deed has been done!
Purchased the Monty today for a bit more than I was wanting to part with,
but at the end of the day it's what we wanted and they don't come up very
often (the Monterey version that is), has all the bells & whistles
that will make it an absolute pleasure to drive.
It's actually in better condition than I first thought after going over it even closer
when we got it home. Been driving it around (smooth as!) showing it orf to friends
and family and we are happy that we did go ahead with the purchase.
Those that we have showed it to can't believe the condition and features for it's age.

ended up getting it for $17900!

cheers

Noel or anyone else, any recommendations for a jackaroo mechanic
who knows these things inside out?
I'm located north of river.

Congrats on your purchase Wolf! :multi: :D

I'm sure that you will have many happy years with the Jack Monty.

So the Mechanic didnt thrash it too badly after all eh? ;)

So have you got any mods planned for it or happy with how it is for a while?

Has everything I need at the mo except for,
air compressor & roof racks.

Will be needing some new tread in prob 6 months time,
so I'll prob look at my options for a 2" lift then and pick the right
profiles for that. Other than that I'm saving the moola for a 5m dinghy
to complete the package.

cheers
