dodgey uni joints or bent yolk?

I just changed all uni joints in my 80series with after market parts. After fitting the new uni's I had a bad drive line vibration. when I got under the car to have look, I noticed both uni's on the rear shaft have about 2mm of play side to side on the drive shaft yolk side. Diff flange yolk side is OK at both ends of rear shaft and front shaft is fine all round.

I used a drift to remove and replace uni's.
I am wondering did I bend the yolks outwards on the drive shaft (it seems odd that both ends are exactly the same and flange yolks are fine).

Or have I got s@#% uni joints. again it seems odd that they fit OK in flange yolk but not shaft yolks.

To replace uni's with toyota parts is about $280. Is it worth spending the coin on genuine parts or go with aftermarket stuff?

Any brand to steer clear of??

was just gonna fix this with pharken Big Hammer to close up yolks, but thought 2-3mm gap was maybe a bit excessive for this kind of fix.

any thought on this??

I normally use Hardy Spicer uni joints.

tried to get some pics, but Nokia not up to the task.

I have used a vise and hammer to try to close up the yolks, partly successful but still about .75mm end play and I dont want to keep flogging it with the hammer

Looks like another set of uni joints are on the cards

just replaced mine last week with off the shelf items from cbc bearings.

had no problems with them. I would say you were supplied with wrong unis or the flange is f^%ked. need to measure the inside of the flange and the diameter of the uj caps and ask a bearing place the specs.

belting it with a hammer wouldn't be doing it much good.

Ive changed uni joints lots of times with hammer and drift and occasionally had to tap the yolk with hammer to take out a bit of side play, but only 0.5-1mm. this time the amount of play definitely was too much.

didnt want to do any damage so I ordered new uni joints today from toyota.

sick of cheap parts that arent up to the job.

Hey mate what brand were the uni-joints that were loose?
I had a similar problem on my old bj40, turned out to be cheap uni's.

Tailshaft place recommended maxi drive uni's as thats what he always uses. Fitting one soon will let you know.

just checked the box, brand was KYM. bought cheap on Evil-BAY
Main label says from Japan but after looking closer is labeled made in Taiwan.

have ordered some from toyota, not cheap but want to be sure my unis are 100% coz im think Im chasing other vibration problems too

Heard parts made in japan are the better ones.

Was chasing a vibration problem on my hilux aswell. Found my rims were bent where they mount on to the hubs / studs, when they went for a wheel balance.
Also found the track bar had bent... DOH!

Genuine is not always better there are many different brands available and some things are better or similar in quality than genuine.
Cheap is not always good, inferior bearings and uni joint are out there and some retailers will charge top (Kellogs) prices for inferior (Home brand) products always check that what you are paying for is what you get. All I can say is buyer beware check & double check.

good advise bud.
not always obvious from a visual that something is not good, the unis I used came of ebay coz $$ are short at the moment, thought id save acouple of bucks, but got bitten on the arz this time.

I fitted toyota unis yesterday, cost $ but obviously better quality. got them fitted no dramas and the vibration I had after fitting cheap unis is gone.
I still have some vibration but suspect it is from tyres,rims or brakes or wheel bearings.
thought the vibration might have been from the front propshaft binding due to pinion angle on front diff (4" lift with rotated steering knuckles) but the vibration is the same with front shaft out
