Reduction Gears
The Novak converter dosnt work for me been loading for 15mins now
I think 6.5s correct 33s so on road is the same as stock so 32s would be a little lower than stock??
Ive been using a different converter and a stock zook with .86 5th 1.4t/c 3.9diffs & 26" tyres works out at 106 @ 4000rpm but that dosnt sound right??
Trying to use this as a base to work out my gearing now.

fitted my 6.5.1 gears this week, tried them out last nite with a welded rear. all i can say is its a different car. 5th low is slower then 1st high. i have 27's and 100kmhr on m4 = 4000revs, but i think the speedo wil be out so i need to find a late model car on 100 and sit next to it Now braking down rocks is faster then driving down them in low 1st. It pretty much drives itself.
Things i absolute needed for the 6.5.1 TrailGears
* Rattle gun (For the flange nuts)
* Bearing puller (For the flanges)
* Air Grinder/ Barrel grinder (For the casing cos gears hit)
* Bench press (For the bearings, gears etc)
* General sockets/spanners 10mm,12mm (For the casing bolts)
* Screwdriver (For various dutys, Seals etc)
* Oh and the missus to pull the gear nob off and select the gears when undooing the driveshaft 14mm nuts
* Then i had to take 1 mount off the transfer under the car cos my zorst hit, the little 1.
* And you need to be bit strong, for some ppl the transfer could be heavy when lowering out of the car

Any ideas on coily 5th gear ratio?
Swap out my 4.16 t/c fpr a stocker while I rebuild it with the new 6.5gears.
Took it for a spin round the block and was suprised how it went. With 33s and 4.8gears its the same as 26s and 3.9s. It was a bit more sluggish when acelerating without down shifting even with the webered 1600. And in 5th at 4000rpm I was only keeping up with cars in the 80 zone but who knows what speed they were doing but my speedo said 120.
With the 4.16 t/c it accelerates uphill towinga trailer I reckon it would struggle now.

for me, yes, for certain stuff full grip rock etc. because of baby tyres u still need speed but to pop onto rocks, but need a locker get the most out of them. with decent, bigger tyres they should b awesome. considering ive had some quotes for rockhoppers s3 for 1200 no warranty. tg has lifetime, but if they break u have to post the back. i also got a bearing kit with mine.

how much delivered to your door? did you email or phone them?
they sound good and the price appears to be great, although are the 6.5's just for crawling rocks etc or will acceptably run well offroad as well yes?
gwagensteve im looking in ur direction for help as well!!
i know the 6.5's are better for running 32/33 tyres but would the 4.9's be any good - argh so confused!

I'm not the best person to ask because I seem to always be looking to go slower.
I love my 6.5's, but if I wasn't always trying to play on steep stuff and taking silly lines I'm sure less gearing would be OK too.
I would say that any crawl ratio above 60:1 will feel pretty good - so 4.9's in a stock WT give 66.1. I;ve driven cars at around this sort of ratio and they're fine, especially with around a 31" tyre and with a 1.3 or bigger.
I'm at 107:1 and will have 136:1 when I'm done.... fingers crossed that's be low enough- that gearing will only be good for 40 km/h at 6500rpm in 5th low, so for "general" use it's way too low.

Guys, just to reiterate, NOW is a great time to be buying gears from the states. I just got my 6.5's from lowrangeoffroad.com for $680 to my door. The exchange rate will not be this good forever so dont wait too long.
Sean from lowrange was fantastic to deal with and bent over backwards to help with all my enquiries, I cannot fault the price of the customer service. Will definitely be dealing with them again. Thanks heaps guys

Hello all, glad to see the gears are all working out well for everyone.
Just wanted to let everyone now that we no longer charge Paypal fees and will take credit cards for Australian orders.
Also wanted to let you know we now have a cheaper option to ship that seems to be just as fast as before and can get a gear kit shipped to you for under $50.00US. That makes a 6.5 gears set about $595.00AU shipped.

If you have a press or access to one then you will only need basic hand tools. A rattle gun may be handy but I managed without one.zook7177 wrote:got 6.5 gears and the mighty kong transfer case mount off santa for my zook to go with the twin lockrites and 31" claws , i have never pulled a transfer case apart but have rebuilt many motors. Is it worth having a go myself?? besides a press what else do i need to get??
