I think my turbo is dying!!

Post by meminiau »

Hi,

My turbo was whistling a little before, but now I have a clicking sound when underload. So I am guessing that the turbo will soon die.

Anyone had to fork out money for a new turbo before? Just wondering what my options are going to be.

Also, if the turbo just stops one day, will I still be able to continue driving, albeit much slower?

cheers

I'm no expert, but I think re-con units are widely available - NFI if they're worth the money.

If the turbo just "freezes" it should affect your ability to drive - yes, you'll be down on power, but the engine should otherwise work.

Worst case, depending on the failure mode, I imagine you could end up losing oil. But I could be wrong.

Just make sure its not going to affect the intake end of the turbo. Bits if metal getting sucked in cant be good.
Dont expect mere proof to sway my opinion.

G'day, my old car was a NA with a 4D56 turbo diesel in it. I replaced my TC05 turbo (changeover unit) at the end of 2005 and paid $780 I think (the way that turbo was set up, it wasnt even worth it!)
