Hard top into 2 seater ute

Generally when you get these parts from a wrecker, you won't get the catches that were on the car to hold the roof panel down. Unforutunately, these catches are pretty specific to Suzuki.
The bulkhead from behind the seats on a maruti can't be used in a SWB beacause it doesn't allow for the wheelarch intrusion.
Noel's car (the SWB pic I posted) was the first one of that type I had ever seen. It used to be a trolley tug at a shopping centre. It definitely came from the factory in that configuration. there are heaps of factory nutsets in the tub to hold the bulkhead in, and the B pillar/ windscreen frame are different.
I have seen a few kincking around Melbourne but always thought they were maruti cab backs until noel got nis.

Try Fantasy4X4 in mythville, They also have WWII jeeps in crates for $77, a shed full of unimog axles and Hummer H1 double beadlock rims for $25 each.
Mate, they will be very very hard to find. It might be better to try and find a whole maruti ute to get one. If a maruti pops up in Melbourne they are normally pretty cheap - cheaper than in rural areas. Then you can use some stuff off it until you trash your car and then build an engineered LWB project when you need to.
PS farmers like the traybacks more (which were hacked into trays in Melbourne when new) so if you find a styleside ute it *should* be even cheaper.

Ive cut a few swb into utes and I will probly cut more. Some do look too short with the trays too high but I have been wheeling mine hard for more years as a ute than a swb and I wouldn't go back. And yes a lot of cuts don't have enough weight in the back my tray wieghs about 100kgs without any fuel in it.
Don't listen to what every one says just make sure you think about everythink before you cut. caus its a lot harder to weld back on than cut off.

Just plate the corners with some smooth steel sheet. Doesn't have to be very thick - 2mm would do - it's the surface area that does the trick not the thickness. They will last forever.

Rhett you appear to have extended your wheelbase which if you had read all the posts in here is what many o f us have been saying. They look and perform ok with the extended wheelbase whereas they look bad and perform no better on stock SWB

Rhett's car also looks balanced because the front axle is pulled well forward. Overall, I reckon rhett's WB woudl be pretty close to a normal LWB.

That ute on ebay won't have the roof your after. Sorry if you realised this, I'm just saying incase you thought it might. The maruti didn't come out in australia untill the 90's, that ute is said to be a '81 model. Or did I miss one...

hey all, i am new to this site, i have had my suzi for a while now, but i did a ute chop, diffiantly took longer than i expected, i can say now that i am sick of welding and cutting, and i am deffiantly sick of Bog, but i am happy with the way my suzi came out, i dont know how legal it is though but i am planning of getting a engineers for it any ways, i will post up pics soon....
Sorry to sound like a downer, but with ANY modification, if you plan to engineer the car, you ned to talk to an engineer BEFORE you start he project.
Engineers need to be involved in the project from the planning stage and most won't touch a car thats already been modified.
If you photographed the build well and can explain exactly what you did, you might be OK, but don't be surprised if you struggle to find someone who will cert it after the fact.

thought id continue this thread cause its so useful. buying a 91 soft top sierra for 500 bucks soon ( wont say where it is hahahahahahah lol ) engine and everything runs beautiful but the rear half of the car has seen better days. it seems like the perfect sierra to go under the knife.
before i do this could anyone tell me from their experience of any MAJOR troubles you had on the way to getting it registered. or is it all smooth sailing after its been engineered? ive got some crazy ideas for it

i chopped mine (and now regret it) but if the backs that stuffed why not have some fun 
who knows you might come up with something that actually looks half decent.
I got mine engineered and rego'd no probs. just make sure you do a decent job of it, and if you can, move the rear diff back an inch or two, makes fitting larger tyres easier and also looks a whole lot better
oh and make sure your tray covers your tyres and the mud flaps are max 230mm from the ground. And i could be wrong (it has happened before
) but i dont think the tray can be welded to the chassis??

) but i dont think the tray can be welded to the chassis??thanks a heap man! yeah i was thinking of using the back door off of a hardtop for it and ive got a little idea in my head of having the tray on a hinge so that it can tilt backwards and i can open the rear door behind the seats dont know what i could use it for yet though.

yeah thats my ute, got it for 1k with rego so i scrapped the conversion idea..
