Hi-lux steering shaft after 2" body lift

I recently put a 2" body lift in my '89 hi-lux & am happy with everything except steering shaft. It only sits about 15mm into both the upper & lower uni joints. Is this enough? I know some companies make shaft extentions but they all seem to be for 3" body lifts, I don't think i'd fit one in. Any advice (except the usual "buy a patrol" crap) would be appreciated!

NOT a failsafe option, try longer high tensile bolts and washers to space the flexi joint.

I also heard someone got a second flexi coupling with longer high tensile bolts and that worked. Not sure how to do it.

is it a solid axle model? f it is you could try the shaft out of an ifs model. i swpped my 84 shaft for an 86 ifs one when i did crossover and the newer shaft seemed a little under 2 inches longer. hope that helps

I had a 3" lift in my LN106 and had no probs with my original shaft. There is a uni joint under the dash you can get a bit out of.

yeah i did 2 inch body and had no probs with steering shaft not beeing long enough and still had plent of play. and i only lossened 1 of the 3 uni joins when i did it. if u still want an extension, superior have them for 150. joey2389

my box is 7" forward and i just sleeved it,Works fine

yeh i was looking into this a while back just cut it and sleeve it with some strong pipe of the correct thickness and weld her up, flick of paint and nancy's ya auntie

mine was running on the end of the spline for a while and didn't trust it then it was lengthend for X-over so it sits about half way another mate got a longer shaft(made up) and another is still runningf it on the end of the spline but i wouldn't trust it too much

Big thanx for all the feed back! Am going to try getting some more length out of the third uni under the dash (cheapest option), If i'm still not happy, will look into an '86 ifs shaft. Will post the results when the job is done.

i ended up setting mine up slackening all the uni''s and its got good contact on sline now, no worries m8

just seen this post , i've welded 20mm into a few steering shafts but is frowned upon by the party police since found out that IFS shafts are a heap longer than the solid axle ones .so with a 2in lift on a solid axle with an IFS shaft you need to trim say 15-20mm and its sweet and factory so no trouble from the law.... my 2 cnts

simple buy your blocks and longer cab bolts. loosen ya shaft joint b4 fitting once in tighten back up... pretty easy really

how much more needs to be done to go up to 3", i'm trying to decide between 2 or 3 at the moment for my 87 runner before we drop the new engine in.

I wouldn't bother have read a bit about there being to much force on the bolts and so on.

Had 3" in my LN106 dual cab for years and no probs. The steering shaft cuts out the seal in the firewall though.

yeah had to cut a bit out of that pannel on my mates one for 2in BL the shaft is sleeved the whole way so the larger diameter didn't fit
