heyas,
im wondering if anyone else has experienced the following:
when in 4wd mode, as soon as there is any resistance applied to the front wheels i CLUNK, CLUNK, CLUNK sound occurs from somewhere at the front/under the car.
So far i have replaceda lot of items trying to find the cause of the problem, but since its impossible to replicate on the hoist, i have thus far been unable to track it down.
the front diff is fine, the front axles and splits are fine, we replaced the bearings on the front axles, the engine mounts we just replaced, the gearbox mounts are fine, there was only a small amount of metal traces in the transfer case, and now we have just pulled the transfer case off.
just looking at the transfer case it appears the chain that drives teh front wheels isnt particularly tight, is this a common fault? has anyone else had the same issue and can verify a loose chain could be the cause of the problem?
Priced up a replacement from mitsubishi, they are $660 for the chain, which is a bit steep for something that yet again 'might' fix the problem. I feel im chasing my tail and replacing so much stuff on the car, costing a fortune but not locating the problem :(

or anyone curious, my workshop just changed the transfer case to another unit, it appears to have solved the problem.
There was no signs of fatigue in the old transfer case and the chain didnt look visibly stretched, however there was a little scuff on the outer casing of the xfer, so im guessing it must have been a stretched chain afterall.
now i have a spare xfer case, im considering putting drop gears in it, but still not sure whether to spend more money on the paj or buy a 100 series.. hmm :S

I bought a 2 yr old 4x4 triton once which had a streched transfer case chain, mitsubishi changed both the chain and the gears under warranty, previous public servant owners must have driven for a fair bit on the bitchy in 4wd for this to happen.
