blown head gasket in 04 gu zd30

Post by Wish I had coils »

father in law just bought a zd30 gu has about 100k on the clock.
Had it for less then two weeks and started to blow a bit of white smoke.

he took it back to the mob that he boought it from and they have had it for about 4 weeks saying that it had blown a head gasket

So he has just got it back two days ago and it's done it again, Does this happen often on these motors, the blown head gasket that is.
I know they where hand grenadies but i thought they fixed it by "04"

Second hand cars are always landmines. Nissan, Toyota, ZD30 fitted or not. :(

Sounds like they fixed it with chemiweld.

You have every legal right to have them fix the vehicle to a proper standard. Blown HG in a ZD30 is pretty rare - almost certainly a sign of other issues I would hazard.

Goodluck with getting the dealer to fix it. Make as much noise as humanly possible - its the only way to fix things with alot of these mobs.

Recently after a trip to perth ( approx 1500k),cracked the head causing Hydraulic Lock(repair bill of $2200 with me doing the work).Car had just ticked over 100,000k's.

Talked to the guy's at perth head exchange ,he informed me that he imports from japan 30 heads a month, most recent failure 2005 model.

These heads commonly crack, the amount of meat between injector hole, glowplug hole, valves is only 4-5mm.not much when high temps get involved.

Many posts on the problems with these motors,do a search.

cheers dkne5.

They did. Chucked some different pistons in it, a different head and common rail injection.

It is now EuroIV compliant. Also has more low down torque (still a 4 banger though).

And so far so good with the ZD30 CRD's. No confirmed cases of them melting yet - which is a bit different from the original ZD30 Di's which started melting less than 10,000km into their lives.

The temp is not riseing at all, The guy he bought it off told him it was the lightforce lights on the front that is the problem And said to take them off or it will void his warranty.
But it not the temp does not rise at all.

Just uses coollent like crazy and blows white smoke on start, somtimes and sometimes not, And is hard to start (ie Takes a bit of cranking, should start easier)

Yep,sounds just like mine was before it died.

Didn't use heaps of coolant probably a litre over 1500k,but when the head finally gave out used all of it.Never been overheated in the time I have had it 35000k's to 101000k's.

As I said previously head is now fixed.uses no coolant, runs heaps better and doesn't smoke like a train.

First I knew of mine failing was it struggled to turn over(still did but slower than normal)then bang hydraulic lock + wouldn't turn over at all.Numbers 3+4 were full of coolant, probably lucky I didn't bend a conrod.

15 hr job to remove head + put back on with new studs etc.Keep us posted on the repairs.

That's interesting, I had heard they were dropping the Diesel in 2009. Must be a myth?

It's not looking good.

Aparently it cost the car yard $1800 to fix this time Buy the sound of it he might be up for a bit more in the not to distant future

Merry christmas.

With over 80% of patrol sales being diesel, yeh, someone's told you a porky.

Mind you I would not say no to a 4.8L on LPG.... :D

mate your better off to fix it yourself, at least you know it will be fixed properly rather than the "1800" peso car yard rebuild in a can. They will do everything they can to get out of fixing it properly and tell you anything, seen it all before with a "rebuilt" 1Hz which was worse after the "rebuild"

cheers

Ring them up.
Tell them its farked.
Get them to come and get it on a trailer.
When they say to drive it in get them to fax a letter to you saying they authorise it (on a letterhead) and any damage will be covered under warrantee.
Speak to the MTA.

Then hold the pecker flat and blow it up :D

i've got a td42 and i had some but not all of the problems you have. i had white smoke on start up and a biatch to crank over. no leaking coolant though. the problems: split fuel line and poor earth. $50 later and so far, it's all good.
