Hey guys bloke here at work has just purchased an ex cop car
He's had the head all done up and it gets hot on big hills....
Try tow his boat and it boils at the sight of a hill....
Has a thermo fan installed to help.
Can anyone thing of another problem.....

Has he had the cooling system pressure tested to see if there are any leaks anywhere either? There is a white + shaped valve on the top radiator hose on the 2.8 which is prone to letting go and not holding pressure resulting in higher engine temps.

I have a 2.8 rx patrol had the same problem. I did every thing you can think of include bigger rad new engine new water pump over hauled the injectors and the pump and had all set to standard.Tried running just thermo fans but the vhicle ran hotter. Made the viscus fan tighter still had the problem. all hoses and thermostat where replaced. moved my spot lights still had the problem.this excersise has cost me near $10 000. I fitted after market oil and coolant temp gauges to check and found out that the origanal gauge on the dash is faulty. so fit a after market gauge and see how you go good luck.
IMHO I think the cooling system on the 2.8s is only just adequate if there are "ideal" conditions. I have had the cooling system on mine looked at a number of times and I get the same response everytime that everything is in order, however the temp guage still seems to move upwards on long inclines at 100+ km/h on 35+ days, but when its on the flat sitting on 100 kms the temp guage will sit on 1/3 and not move, as with 4wding the guage doesn't move doing low speeds so the cooling system is obviously working well when the engine isn't working that hard.

A good sparky should be able to test the guage for you, there is a tool to check it with. Good place to start, remember the basics.
Also, when they checekd your mates radiator, did they just flush it or did they remove it & service it?
Reason I ask this is they can build up a lot of crap between the AC condensor & the radiator which blocks the fins. This was the death of mine as the mud & gunk started to corrode the core from the outside.
