Plugs, points and leads will cause this as well as a bad tune of gas.

If its running too lean it will backfire though the carby

for a gas vehicle with points i recommend converting them to pointless ignition systems like a crane cam. simple, easy and they are optical sensor driven, no hall affect crap that i don't like

what do you think about a

PERTRONIX IGNITOR KIT

this kit works off the six flat lobes on the shaft.

Typically they run lean at high load low rpm, I change the secondary converter spring and retune to rectify it. Also electronic ignition on top of whats been mentioned, quality plugs, leads, cap, rotor.
The Petronix is OK as a points replacement but you can only run a points coil or one with high primary resistance, a HEI coil will burn it out due to the higher current draw. I fit an ICE module and coil raising the output from a potential 30 kV to 65 kV with over twice the burn time. The result is a noticable increase in power and low down torque with improved economy as well.

If all threads that showed "the problem as solved" were deleted then we'd have little to search back through......

Thread tittle edited to suit the section.
