Removing carpet and possible paint on alternatives ?
OK, well after getting my troll stuck in a mudbog yesterday, that was deep enough to be over the bonnet and pouring in the bonnet scoops, the carpets in the Troll needed a good steam cleaning today, but most of the dirt and mud - and WATER - is still under the carpet.
I could just open her up and let her dry out, and maybe vacuumn and steam clean it a few more times, but since I'm about to get the seat mount holes welded up, I need to pull the carpet out before the welding anyway.
So looks like I'm about to have to strip the entire vehicle of seats and stuff and get the whole carpet out.
Since I have to do THAT, then I may as well just leave it out and not bother putting it back in, and use some paint on product to replace the carpet, and at the same time have the benefit of being a rustproof coating that carpet isn't.
I have searched out the threads in here on hardliner, which looks like it would be awesome, and was something I always wanted to use to replace the flooring in my zook, but other threads on the subject mention a heap of other products such as septone body deadener.
Without carpet, the troll will need a product that is also - to at least some extent - a sound proofer as well, so the Body deadener MIGHT be ok, but being bitumen based, I wonder if it gets sticky in hot weather, it seems to primarily be an underbody product where sticky in the heat wouldn't be an issue, but sticky in the heat would be a real issue inside a vehicle.
So,
* Are there any tips I need to know for removing carpet?
* Is there any chance of hosing the carpet off, cleaning it up as much as possible, and putting it back in succesfully, or is it likely to shrink/stretch/warp etc?
* What product would you suggest as a replacement for flooring and carpetting INSIDE a vehicle? Considering that just a few I've searched up are, "Hardliner", "Wurth Stone Guard", "Soundoff", "Dynamat Dynashield" and a dozen or more other products, it becomes a pretty hard choice?
* Is septone likely to get tacky or sticky in heat?
* Is Hardliner likely to deaden any noises.
* Maybe a number of products, one for inside for wear and tear resistance, and one under the vehicle for noise.
Yes, I know that decarpetting is a nasty thing to do to the luxury Ti model Patrol, with all the flash niceties in carpet, velour, fancy trim etc. But in all honesty resale value is not really an issue here, but function and maybe even rust protection, are much more important. Especially when you have the stupid habit of sinking the darned things in water.

Be careful with herculiner - some of the retailers of it here in Australia can have old stock and it pretty much sets in the bottom of the cans. We did two cars about 18 months ago or so and the stuff was lumpy and inconsistent, even after mixing with a power drill mixer for so long we wore out a bucket.
I did my Gwagen in it years and years ago (maybe 1999?) and it has been excellent. I wouldn't hesitiate in recommending it if you can get fresh stuff.

we use it in the bash cars and they get a far harder time than the average 4x4 that does go offroad !
One car has been in Stoneguard for 5 years now...... it has 1 chip but has not yet worn through under the divers feet position.
$19 a 1lit can.........
2 cans do a std sedan type vehicle.
clean the surface ( NO sanding required)

I did a search on google images last night for "Herculiner" which is one brand that you do yourself, and that has been recommended by a number of people.
Plenty of images of it inside vehicles.
Even some of vehicles that have had the whole car painted with it.
And for those wondering if it would slowly get inground dirt in it and turn brownish, this photo looks like it's been in for a bit longer than the other images that look like they were taken when the paint was new.
This appears to have aged at least as well as most flooring would.
Looks like this product could be a winner.
Now to find where to buy it, and how much.
Oh and you can do as many coats as you like apparently, some have talked of SIX coats, others seem to do 2 or 3. But if it was to prevent heat and sound, I'd imagine the more coats the better.

Lynx were the distributor (same guys who distribute splitfire plugs etc) but I can't stress enough how important it is that its fresh. If its gone off there's NOTHING you will be able to do.
It does not stain, but it isn't the easiest to clean either - the best way is to hose and scrub, then use a set vac to suck all the the water out, otherwise the dirt stays in the the texture.
It's pretty impervious to solvents etc once set too.

I had no problems as the foam is attached to the carpet and came out with the carpet.

SO long as it's a urethane based product or similar not the bitumen based stuff - that gets soft when its hot, soft when you spill oil on it, soft when you lean something heavy on it.... I speak from experience -

Ive just bought and used some chipguard called Tex Coat 4313. The Body shop sell it for $15 a spray can (only did a small area).
Gives a good hard textured finnish with only a couple of light coats. Looks the shiz

Ive tried to contact Herculiner via email direct in the states but no reply.
Does anyone know where I can possibly get some in Oz? If not what is the neext best product to achieve a similar finish? Ive tried all the pressure pack type options and they are OK but want the best. My 40 is fibreglass too so need an option good for this. Anyones previous experience and advice greatly appreciated!
