hey guys..
building my new buggie and im shore i have sceen ppl usea camry motor and auto with a welded diff as a replacment for a box and tranfer in a buggie??
any one done this???
also what did the gearing come out like?
i will be useing lux diffs with 4.88's and proberbly 37-39's
this is only a play toy so not for comp..
im shore that mock used this set up in his rodent buggie??

Yes, we used the Camry motor in the Rodent.
As with most things you learn a lot when you build something then more as you use it. The original plan was to use a Honda engine and transaxle (all alloy) then when Mock got impatient and bought a Camry (it was CHEAP).
The gearing was OK with the 37's and MQ diffs (4.6 ratio). NOTE: Make sure your diffs have the same ratio both ends
The end result weighed 1024kg wet. If we had have used the Honda engine we would have come in under the 1,000kg limit and would have then used ballast down lower.
The Honda engine had more power than the Camry.
One other thing was the centre bearing in the front shaft, we used a Hilux one , should have used a "pillow block" (kick ass solid mounted bearing).

For any terrain you require the gear reduction and packaging of a rear mounted transaxle for you woudln't want a manual. Plus, gear linkages, clutch cable etc - it woudl be a PITA. Much better as an auto.
Mock's car never seemed to lack power, it's problems were more associated with turning circle and suspension geometry, nthing to do with the motor/gearbox. Seemed to thrive on abuse and rollovers

should be using a lux 4.88's
the other thing i am thinking is the rotation in drive? as the motor will be front mounted not rear.. (although rear has crossed my mind a bit over the last few days) not a big deal to turn the centres 180' tho. and also the issue with the length of the front shaft? being as the output for the centre diff from memory is about at the bell housing, my front shaft will only be about 600 long...

Best advice i can give you is not to build a buggy on the cheap. Take your time and use QUALITY components.
Example - Standard Hilux axles in a buggy with 37-39" tyres won't last long. They'll break and stuff your day.
Engine- The Honda engine is lighter (meaning it takes less to push its own weight around) and it has more power.
Seat - Don't use a cheap seat or harness, first tim you have a decent roll you'll regret having a cheap seat.
Take your time, use good parts and THINK about everything you do before you do it.

Hond a motors had both gearbox on LHS and RHS of engine too (reverse rotation motors) which might make packaging easier, or allow for not flipping diffs to get correct drive dirrection.

im not as much as doing it on the cheep. just looking at what is going to be good for what i am doing.
this is going to be more of a zook truggy than a buggie (useing a zook chassi and some of the zook tub but mostly tube)
i may switch to gq's rather than lux.
tim dosent sceem to have many problems with his buggie on 37' stickeys..
dont worry seats and harneses etc will all be good quality stuff!

I know you have a Zook chassis sitting there, i think there was a picture somewhere with a Nissan motor on it somewhere. If you're running a transaxle i'd be building a chassis, there will be less work building a chassis to take a transaxle that modifying an existing front engine chassis to suit.
If it's a trail rig, you'd be better looking at building a pro mod (2 seat). Again i think there's probably more work in building a Pro Mod than an unlimited due to the tighter constraints but atleast you can go wheeling with other people.

it will never be used on the road or over like 50kph at max..
there are no comps down here so it will be built to my specs to be honist..
i just want something light, low and super capable.. (in comparison to most things down here)
i am still thinking the cammo motor and box is looking at the best viable option to me..
will go do some mesurments tonight and go from there!
honda set up is also viable...
one thing that im thinking is what holds the tailshafts in the box? cammo ones bolt on, but honda ones are a push in cv.. and i have sceen them thrown out under high loads etc... (in fwd tubo cars but still)???
Transaxle in a front engined 2 seat vehicle = waste of time. Just use a regular front engine, gearbox to transfer. The other way is to put the motor in place of the passengers seat.

you say u want something light low and capable but u are using a standard chassis using a Suzuki tub having guards.
so your adding weight, width and you wont be able to get it low cos you have to design around the chassis. makes no sense to me.
