i'd prefer a pretty hot 4.2 for events ... for reliability issues
then again depends on the event

Everyone is entitled to there opinions and what they like however i like my diesel and not just any diesel i really like the 4.2 its simple and has plenty of potential.
And yes you buy cheap chevs and make the same power probably with less but is it really once you start doing conversion and then these adapters may break or fail... anyway im not here discussing 4.2 or other motors...
However i did upgrade my gu td6.... all i need to do now is the pump and i should get around 200rwkw pending on the boost.
At the moment its 15psi dyno figures i dont know hasnt been put on it will in the next few weeks....
However to give you a run down.
- garrett roller turbo (custom spec not off the shelf)
- PWR 600 x 300 x 75 intercooler
- Aluminum intercooler pipe work
- Aluminum airbox has an F350 filter in it out of the V8 Diesels
- Stainless Steel snorkle recessed in the guard.
- Stainless steel dump pipe
- 4" pipe work from turbo inlet to airbox then 4" outlet of airbox to the snorkel.
- extractor manifold HPC coated
- OIL catch can
- Stainless steel oil drain feed and custom made high pressure lines...
I think thats about it...... here are few pics

Nope standard motor wont need to be balanced have seen motors with over 25 psi last over 150k so no need really....Hoonz wrote:weeman have you had that thing balanced?

It costs 7k to build a stock TD42, add porting, balancing HPC, some cryo, big clutch. No std clutch will hold 200 rwkw, where do the bolt ons stop?
There are a lot of people who have cost themselves thousands to save hundreds, It pains me to see that happen, I'd rather inform the customer of the likely outcomes and risk losing the job than say I can do something to only have his 300k engine fail, then have to pull off everything thats been done build the engine and put it together again. Do it once do it safe.
I have a dissasembled 400K GQ TD42, it needs a build. Balancing is not that dear and the factory rods are as far out as 20 grams. If you want to bolt all the extras onto a GU factory TD42 go for it, they have bigger rods and piston pins and will probably handle it. There is always a cheaper option but I like to do things once where possible, a comp truck that sees full throttle for 10 seconds at a time will last longer than someone towing a 3 ton bobcat back and forward to Sydney that may be at full throttle for 5 minutes up a big hill.
Yes I'll bolt on all the go fast bits to an old motor and tune it with the correct EGTs but if I didn't build the engine I can't warrant it, I dont' make decisions for my customers, I just try to offer them the alternatives, pros and cons and leave the decision to the customer.
A standard GQ TD42 may be 3500 but a GU factory turbo motor sure ain't, expect 7-8000 for a used one.
The GQ and GU factory turbo engines are very different internally, you will get away with a lot more with a GU factory turbo than a non turbo GQ TD42

spec's so far are ported head with back cut valves, heavier springs
Ivan Tighe reground cam
reco pump with 12mm head and rotor, other mod's
sufari turbo , high flowed with ball bearing center
getting balanced at the moment.
nearly ready to reassembly and wanting to know,
what cooling system up grades are there?
and what clutch should I be using, cheers Phill.
any other suggestions?

No, The chev still goes hard, this is my next project, (the misses car), ideally I would like to put the chev in the GU and run the TD42 in the old GQ

The motor I am Building is a GU TD 4.2t so its good to here the internals are stronger, kind of justifies the cost as I'm nearly at 8k in parts and still haven't started to put it together,

Ive got a td42 which goes pretty hard. Last time I dyno'ed it I got 152rwkw. All ive done so far is- High flowed the turbo, (which is a denco high mount), match port both manifolds, upgraded fuel pump also by denco, a big front mount intercooler and a cam grind. I fully rebuilt the engine before hand, didnt balance it because my machine guy recons that the nissan stuff is pretty goon. I havent advanced the modded pump, its running standard and Im running around 25pound boost. The only thing I dont like is the amount of smoke it blows. Its crazy Id like to know how people can build crazy diesels and blow bugger all smoke. I was watching last years outback and Kym Boltons wasnet blowing bugger all smoke and it goes hard. Id love to sit down with his engine builder and chat for a while. Future plans for mine would be better injectors, advance the pump abit and maybe a plenumn. That should be good for near 200 I think. In the long run its all down to $$$$$.

Bad injectors, pump, fuel, pump timing out and over fuelling... ???The only thing I dont like is the amount of smoke it blows. So 205 hp isnt much needles with standard pump setting and fuel?? As i said I havent advanced the pump or fuel?? Fuel is a funny thing because you can give more fuel and you loose horsepower, its very touchy. i will agree with the injectors, they need doing. Its all experemental work at the moment as pretty much no one does high performance work in darwin, with diesels. Ill get 200rwkw+, just give me time.

You've got to go to the 12mm plunger, fit a decent aneroid and bump up the breaking pressure of the injectors a tad. Use the biggest air-cleaner you can find that will fit under the bonnet.
Kym's engine was built by SEQ4x4. Rumoured to be in excess of $20k and I think its been rebuilt a couple of times.
if youve seen kyms engine bay and what money he throws at it youll know why it doesnt blow too much smoke. he has every mod people are talking about here... and a custom GT35 turbo to go with it.
he now has auto and recons its the best the cars ever been, but wait till people report back on extreme winch this weekend

I might need ceramic coating after this!!...money on ceramic coating could be better spent on other performance mods...heat rejection on piston crown..maybe?
