Fuel Tanks..

Post by Link »

I'm thinking about extending the wheel base back on my swb patrol, but need some ideas on what to do with the fuel tank.. I'll probably do a switch on the spring mounts so they are on the opposite curve of the chasis and stick another cross member in further back.. This won't leave much room for a tank, and a small sub tank underneath isn't enough.. Any ideas?

Will trade ideas for a 1600x1200 of your avatar :D

I am not sure what you mean about swapping the mounts to the opposite curve? If you are prepared to make a custom tank there shoul dbe heaps of room above/in front of the axle..

How far are you moving the axle back?

Haven't measured it all up yet, but the idea was to take the spring mounts off and switch them to the other side of the chasis.. so the spring mount gets chopped, taken round the other side of the truck, and mounted back on the down slope towards the rear of the truck.. Having probs explaining myself so it's pic time..

Here's your other pic :D

Kylie Minogue photochop ROFL...

if that is roughly where you are going to move the springs to, why no ditch the factory mounts, put a crossmember through at that point with some cylinders (~8" pipe @ 50mm long) to locate the coils. that crossmber then also becomes the rear mount for your fuel tank??

seems like an awful lot of work for not much gain in wheelbase. If you are going to do it, why not go for 5" plus! (do it once!)

The gain from that should be at least 5" plus.. The new mounts should sit next to the originals, so in theory you could leave the old ones in place.. Whether I go that way or try something like Wendle suggested, I'm not sure yet, but either way I'll have to do something about the tank..

You could fit a fuel tank behind the cab,on top of the tray(if that's leagal and you don't have anything else planned for that space)
