Bummer .. sorry to hear that NAM .. full points for effort on your behalf though .. hopefully you have not sold off to many parts yet .. so you can keep wheeling until they (engineers) come to their senses
What reason\reasons did he give ... was it width, weight, chassis strength or more to do with suspension design ??

yeah he said anything like a hilux or bigger would be okay.
at the moment, the cost of buying a good running hilux, building it up, rebodying it, etc... would be much to prohibitive. down in vic, hiluxes are quite expensive for some reason.
i'm considering a 2dr rangie...
but i'm going to go to 33 muddies and keep wheeling the zook for the time being.

also, i am planning to get the work done in NSW which adds a layer of complexity in logistics - but nothing that cannot be overcome.
nothing is happening until late jan though as i am too busy over this christmas period.
Jaysus Nam, you been reading a dictionary/Shakesphere in your spare time???

That would be cool and you should be able to pick up an oldie for a good price. Those axles would be perfect under a rangie sized vehicle.
Good luck with it and have fun in the meantime wheeling the (relative) stocko. There is much fun to be had in any 4b.
