I'm running a 1kz-te in a LJ70 or bundera on a manual box. So far so good and no major problems. The engine is standard, no intercooler or add on gimmicks like boost controllers.

One thing I am worried about is the engine heat. Seems to be giving off some degrees!! The temp sensor is always stable at about 50% and no higher.

Is there anything I can do to get rid of the hot air? Or blow some colder air through to the engine?

Perhaps following:

1. Oil Cooler
2. Bonnet scoop (but I hate them)
3. Electric Fan....but retain the clutch fan
4. Anything else??/

Oh, and just to add, I am in a tropical climate. Average daily temp 31 degC.

That sounds about right sitting on half. In all the late model hiluxs i have owned or delt with they have all sat on half from new while being driven in temps from -5 to near 50 degrees. That temp will be what the thremostat keeps it at.

On most hiluxs/4runners/surfs there is a dead spot on the temperature gauge. The temp gauge will creep up to half way and no further attention is paid to it. I own a surf fitted with the 1kt-t and what is displayed on the gauge is not what's really happening

There is a mod that can be done so that the gauge gives real and accurate figures of what's happening with your engine temps. Once the mod is done it's pretty freaky how much it moves around and where it peaks under load.

Looks like an after market temp gauge would be the best bet.

Oil cooler? Where would be the best place to mount one?

Yep I know the temperature gauge sticks at 50% and I know something is not right when I used to go up one steep hill and reach Red in my 2LT.

Dads prado TD blows a HUGE amount of heat out of the drivers wheel arch- coincidently thats where the turbo lives, but its never got really hot before.

Excellent advice about the temp gauge. I'll give that mod a go as given in the url.

The bonnet could be raised 1/2" to 1" at the hinges by putting spacers there. I had that on my 2lt. That gives a large area for the heat to escape.

I had robs with my '94 surf and 1KZTE overheating (auto). Tracked it to the fan clutch. Silicon Oil fixed i perfectly. Falt throttle up the soft sand after that, no worries.

If the gauge says it's OK, and the gauge works, I wouldn't worry.

Did the same thing on mine.Spent the coin on a new viscous hub from Toyota as the bi-metallic spring on my old one was shagged. Installed an 8 blade fan from a 1hz and has kept the engine temps down even under extreme load. The 1hz fan moves heaps more air through the radiator and engine bay. A few guys on the surf site are doing these mods and having favourable outcomes.
