valve stems

Post by dwaynes »

Hi guys My 4x4 is burnign a bit of oil and from some reseach i have done it looks like valve stem seals.

By this i mean it doesnt leak oil anywhere, also when reving there is no smoke but on deceleration i get a small puff.

is there any other options to determine whats causing the burning oil?

Also if its just valve stems whats it worth form them to be replaced?

Thanks

I could be wrong, and i'm sure someone will correct me, but from what you're saying i'd have a guess and say its your piston rings.

You didn't say what car/motor it was in either, that'll probly help someone else answer the question a bit better.

I'm generalizing but rings usually smoke under load and guides (stem seals) under or just after high vacuum situations like decelleration or long idle periods.

leave it idling for a while, a minute or 2, then give it a boot.. if you get a big puff of smoke, its valve stems..
