G'day im finally getting new rubber on my lux and are looking at these 2 brands mainly beacause i've heard good things about them both and more to the point I can get these at a reasonably good price through family. I will run them on the road (yeah I should have 2 sets of tyres but havent got much time to get out in the bush so I cant be shagged changing wheels!) and im just wondering if anybody has had these two tyres and what they though of them off road, on the road and how they wore when on the road. Im assuming the BFG will be noisier but not really fussed.

There is soooooo much info on here about both tyres, and even comparisons of the two.
BFG are known to give good kms, and are fairly good in the mud.
MTR are known to be very good on rocks and on the blacktop, but maybe less kms due to softer compound. (Although some people are getting 70k+)
Any tyre with that much void space will be noisy!
For touring, they are pretty similar, with the MTR having a good reputation for puncture resistant sidewalls.
The Goodyears have been around a while now and have been tested with good reports, and BFG have always been here, and always been good.

Luckily I got the Road Hazard warranty with them thru Beaurepaires, only have to pay for the tread usage, cost $66.00 for 3 new tyres so far.
Once they wear out I won't be getting them again.

I have run both and will never buy either again. I first had the bfg mt's and every time i went off road the sidewall would fill up and leak due to the "so called" rim protector. On road they were ok but i only had them for 2 months and sold them in disgust. The Mtr's i got second hand as a swap for my smaller tyre due to wanting larger rim, tyre combo. They were as noisy as hell handle crap on road (wandered) and were scary in the wet. crap in mud also and worst of all are an undersized tyre (nearly 2" smaller than my swampers and also smaller than my Maxxis roadies). I run 2 sets of tyre, for roadies i was running Toyos and now Maxxis 751's and my play tyres are Swampers I now have the best of both worlds By the way all these tyres were 33's on 15x8 sunnys except the Toyo's as they were 31's on 15x7 sunnys i swapped for the Mtr's.
Maybe the new BFG KM2's will be nicer and handle better? The Mtr's may be ok for your application but out of the 2 i'd probably rate the bfg's slightly better. Still won't buy either again though thats my 5c's

Well this thread has made tyre choosing harder, good to get a view opinions,I guess you cant get it all in 1 tyre, my mainapplication would be loose rocks and muddy trails and hills and on road. From what I have gathered BFG probably suite more I'm temptedto wait till the new MK2 comes in see how that goes..

You would have no idea as to how the tyre was treated, how old they were and if they were balanced and/or rotated. That would explain the noise, and the lack of tread would explain your grip concerns, along with the tyre hardening as it aged.

I've run MTR's and BFG MT's new and old pattern on my GQ. 33x12.5x15

I've found the Bfg's to be excellent on road, especially in the wet, and off road I found them to have good traction as well, the only thing that keeps me from using them again on my wagon is the thin 9mm weak side wall that will stake easily, have done two of them, not nice when they still have 75% tread left and not repairable .
I use the old left overs on my work ute now and no problems for on road duties, have 65,000+ k's on them now and still have 5-8 mm tread left
Have never used MTR's but have mates that swear by them, but seem to have a shorter life.

I guess some of this is true but i had Swampers that were over 8 years (yes this is correct) old and nearly bald they handled better than even the MTR's on road (apart from flat spotting when cold, taken 10 mins to warm up) and the MTRs sucked even worse off road. So they still suck in my eyes. That's why i now own new Swampers but also road tyres.

Just thought I'd add, (that going by the website) the KM2's will only be made in R16" & up. have you considered micky T baja claws. i had MTR's and i was very pleased with em untill they wore out :( never suffered any tyre damage. then i tried some baja claws and drove then about 10000 kms till they got stolen :( and i was happy with these aswell. i think for a mud tyre the claws are better but for a rock tyre the MTR's are better. i have not tryed BFG as i heard too many bad stories about em and i would not even touch a cooper tyre. just my 2 cents worth
I have 33" MTR's on my maverick and have been pretty happy with them as an allrounder. Have done about 50000kms and I would think there is about another 20000 left in them. My rig is pretty heavy, about 2.8 tonne and has done some hard kays offroad through the simpson and a lot of corrugated tracks through the territory. Not a single puncture or any sidewall damage in that time. I carried an extra spare wrangler through the simpson and it stayed on the roof the whole time. As for mud I find them ok in all but the very muddiest tracks, I can live with that as I believe they are far superior to the BFG's on the tar.

Best option is to stick with what you know best. Or see what your mates are using and if they are happy, and going everywhere, then go with what they are using. You cant go wrong then.
