4BD1 Rangie...What are they like to drive?
I am looking at putting a NA 4bd1 into my 89 rangie with a standard 5 speed and a lt230 transfer case.
I would like to hear from owners of similarly equipped vehicles, as to what they are like to drive. I am mainly interested in off road performance, ie: how do they climb, throttle response, how do they handle large tyres etc.
I have driven a L/C troopy NA diesel for the last 12 years, how will it compare to that?
any help will be appreciated.

had/have one in my 90 (turbo though) but even before i put the hairdryer on it was sweeeeet offroad. took 35's on standard gearing easy, 2nd low up very steep stuff and 1st low for real crawling. awesome torque and throttle response, good amount of tractible power. engine braking on downhills awesome. could just idle most things, hmmmm will miss it

A mate has had a 4BD1T rangie for almost 2 years now with a stock lt77 5spd and it has handled it fine so far and he has also done a heap of heavy towing with no hassels. Yet another mate has the same motor and has killed more than one LT77 and also R380s. A mate over here bought one a while back. On a recent 4x4 trip, he sais his brand new D3 has just sat in the garage since he has bought the isuzu 110. He prefers driving it to the D3!!!

As long as you dont abuse the gearbox or expect it to tow heavy gear in 5th it will be fine. Although these motors handle lugging very well try to avoid it and use the gears when going up steep hills.Corgie Carrier wrote:Thanks for all the comments, guys.

Hi guys,
I am thinking I need a different daily driver and thinking Isuzu County. I don't want to wear out my refurbished 74 2door 350 too fast. The motor has only done about 300k km since rebuild.
Been watching all things Isuzu, especially Dougal/ Kiwibacon's comments on various fora and think the viewers of this current thread should have a look at this:
