4BD1 Rangie...What are they like to drive?

I am looking at putting a NA 4bd1 into my 89 rangie with a standard 5 speed and a lt230 transfer case.

I would like to hear from owners of similarly equipped vehicles, as to what they are like to drive. I am mainly interested in off road performance, ie: how do they climb, throttle response, how do they handle large tyres etc.

I have driven a L/C troopy NA diesel for the last 12 years, how will it compare to that?

any help will be appreciated.

the two I have seen were bloddy orsum.

squillions of torque, plenty of throttle response in low range (had maxi drive 30% low range gearset). Offroad they are tough, slow and predictable.

had/have one in my 90 (turbo though) but even before i put the hairdryer on it was sweeeeet offroad. took 35's on standard gearing easy, 2nd low up very steep stuff and 1st low for real crawling. awesome torque and throttle response, good amount of tractible power. engine braking on downhills awesome. could just idle most things, hmmmm will miss it

A mate has had a 4BD1T rangie for almost 2 years now with a stock lt77 5spd and it has handled it fine so far and he has also done a heap of heavy towing with no hassels. Yet another mate has the same motor and has killed more than one LT77 and also R380s. I think as long as you dont flog it you will be fine.

yep mine only had the LT77 since the motor went in over 15yrs ago and i turboed it about 3yrs ago, and no dramas, but i only putt around - normally run 33's town/touring and 35's offroad, everything else pretty much standard.

Seriously there one lump of a diesel engine and most people who have them fitted are rapt in tem. If i was into diesels (which I'm not, I'm a V8 bloke ), that would be my choice of engine into an old RRC.

I love my isuzu powered 110 and wouldn't want to drive anything else. Will be even better when I have finished fitting the turbo.

A mate over here bought one a while back. On a recent 4x4 trip, he sais his brand new D3 has just sat in the garage since he has bought the isuzu 110. He prefers driving it to the D3!!!

Likewise since I bought my Isuzu County, I don't like driving my TD5 Disco, it's too quiet, refined and car like in comparison to the 4BD1

I will be putting a LT77 and LT230 behind it, so it should be a good rig when it is finished.

As long as you dont abuse the gearbox or expect it to tow heavy gear in 5th it will be fine. Although these motors handle lugging very well try to avoid it and use the gears when going up steep hills.

Hi guys,

I am thinking I need a different daily driver and thinking Isuzu County. I don't want to wear out my refurbished 74 2door 350 too fast. The motor has only done about 300k km since rebuild.

Been watching all things Isuzu, especially Dougal/ Kiwibacon's comments on various fora and think the viewers of this current thread should have a look at this:
